linux guys: any ideas on goofy network problem?
 

Have you ever had the case where a totally new computer with a totally fresh Linux install has had the network work fine in terminal, but not in any other apps? My brother tried Fedora 4 and now Ubuntu, and he can ping, curl, wget, all of that, but programs like Firefox fail to connect to anything. It just doesn't make sense.

Has anyone run into this?

Is he using a proxy server to get out? If so, you have to configure FireFox to use it.

nope, it's just him behind his router, and it's giving an ethernet address. we're trying a non-onboard eth card now... maybe it'll unstick something? :confused:

That is really odd... console applications work, but not X applications? I'd be thinking it was an OS problem, but given he's tried different OSs. Could be some funky hardware problem... failing to communicate correctly through the TCP/IP stack.

Turning off the onboard and using a pci nic worked, but I have no idea why! He was totally able to apt-get and update all of his stuff, but none of the X apps. Very goofy...

Umm, perhaps IP chains was enabled for the other interface and not allowing traffic outbound from the browser.
