Seen pictures of that ship. That superstructure seems awfully high. Possibility it rolled?

The free market at work, screw safety operating regulations.
If people are willing to pay higher fares for less crowded ferries, the market will provide. "It would only take a bit of water to get on board this ship and it would be all over," Osler said. "The percentage of this type of ferry involved in this type of disaster is huge." The market has spoken, the next ferry will probably have just as many people on it.

More info coming out now. The pax smelled fire one hour out of port, and the crew did not return to land but kept steaming to open water. Were said to be fighting the fire but why not return to port where everyone could have gotten off?
Two hours later and not one announcement from the crew, the ship sank in open water. At this time about 385 people saved in several lifeboats, and another 150 bodies in the water. About 900 people missing and assumed that they are still in their cabins... Sad to see... JoeA

more realistic:
these "working class people" probably don't make enough money to afford better accomodations for a trip back home. sucks to be poor, don't it? |

Its getting worse. News reports now are saying that the crew did not say anything or do the alarm. Also reports that the Captain got off on one of the lifeboats, leaving passengers on the ship while sailing to safety.
Then we have the families of the passengers at the dock waiting for news of their families. The Egyptians instead of helping them called the riot police... Sad situation all the way around. Joe A

Latest is that a truck in the hold caught fire an hour out. Crew was battling the fire the entire time. Captain was reluctant to turn around because of the sea state and wind speed. Reports to the captain were that the fire was being fought successfully. By the time the real news reached the bridge, and the turn attempted, the ship's bilges were pretty full from the debris and the water from the fire fighters. The ship rolled and sank in the turn.
