tequilla question
 

One of my employees just got back form a trip to Mexico (his native country) and he brought me a bottle of Jarro Viejo tequilla.

Now I absolutely hate the junk tequilla that's available locally like jose quervo etc, but I know there's some really good stuff out there. My question? Is this Jarro Viejo the good stuff or regular stuff? :confused:

The good stuff smells good, almost sweet.

Should make the back of your tounge water and lick your lips just by smelling it. If not, give it to me.;)

My first experience with really good te-kill-ya was at the German Autofest a couple of years ago. Mike Z had a bottle of the really good stuff, I tried it, I like it.
I'm just trying to figure out if this Jarro Viejo is like that. If I open up th bottle and take a big wiff and it's the cheap gross stuff, I'll likely hurl :(

I'm hoping someone is familiar with this particular brand. plus I won't get off work for several hours and the anticipation is killing me. Kinda like waiting to open a christmas present from Grandma wondering is it's a BB gun or socks.

Here are the various styles of tequila. There are, of course ranges in each style. Patron silver for instance is quite tasty so being silver doesn't necessarily make it worse than a reposado.

I'd say that there's a good chance that it's tasty stuff. I'd definitely give it a go. If you aren't sure then ship it to me, I'll try it, and then ship it back. I'll even leave some in the bottle for you.


Blanco or Silver
This is the traditional tequila that started it all. Clear and transparent, fresh from the still tequila is called Blanco (white or silver) and must be bottled immediately after the distillation process. It has the true bouquet and flavor of the blue agave. It is usually strong and is traditionally enjoyed in a "caballito" (2 oz small glass).

Oro or Gold
Is tequila Blanco mellowed by the addition of colorants and flavorings, caramel being the most common. It is the tequila of choice for frozen Margaritas.

Reposado or Rested
It is Blanco that has been kept (or rested) in white oak casks or vats called "pipones" for more than two months and up to one year. The oak barrels give Reposado a mellowed taste, pleasing bouquet, and its pale color. Reposado keeps the blue agave taste and is gentler to the palate. These tequilas have experienced exponential demand and high prices.

Añejo or Aged
It is Blanco tequila aged in white oak casks for more than a year. Maximum capacity of the casks should not exceed 600 liters (159 gallons). The amber color and woody flavor are picked up from the oak, and the oxidation that takes place through the porous wood develops the unique bouquet and taste.

Reserva
Although not a category in itself, it is a special Añejo that certain distillers keep in oak casks for up to 8 years. Reserva enters the big leagues of liquor both in taste and in price.

i never quite understood the te-kill-ya thing
never had any monster hangovers from it
or had any other weird side effects

i've had weird reactions from other types of drinking
mostly the "haven't eaten all day and we hit the pub" type

Anything Anjeo is my opinion.

This is the best Tequila I've ever had. Unbelievably smooth.

I have to admit, 30 years ago, Jose Cuervo made me a pathetic, humbled, and religous man as I hurled repeatedly into the commode. All the while swearing to God Almighty that if my gonads didn't come up on the next dry-heave, I would never drink again. Being the nice guy that God is..... he let me have a beer now and then to this day. But it took me about 5 years to be able to even stand the smell of tequilla.

Know a flight attendent who loves the stuff. Course she gets all the shots she wants by standing at the bar with the guys and saying "isnt this the stuff that makes girls clothes fall off after a while?" Yes, she is drop dead good looking... and lives in the LA area...

Oh, I have some Tequila stories...

When I spent my junior year of college living in Trier, Germany, we partied a LOT. My American and British friends and I went through a bottle or two of something just about every night. We even had a beer vending machine in our dorm (great chasers). One night I had too much of the cheap tequila we bought, was playing my guitar for everyone and did a very sudden projectile vomit. Some of the mess landed on my very nice leather jacket and stained it. A few mos. later we were at a diskothek and my jacket was stolen. I walked home in the snow wearing jeans, Chuck Taylors and a t-shirt. I knew my jacket was a lot different than the ones I saw the local Germans wearing and mine had a distinctive stain on it, to boot! A few nights later, we were in this bar and a guy walked in wearing my jacket. I jumped up and three large American buddies of mine came with me to confront the guy. I politely asked him in German if I could see his jacket. The idiot handed it right over. I pointed to the stain and the torn label and explained this was mine and I was taking it. He shrugged, turned around and left the bar. I held up my jacket and the whole bar broke out in applause.

That's just one of many ways tequila can help you.

I danced naked in the Gulf of Mexico drinking tequila, people were surprised I was not hungover, or at least a bit sore from falling down the stairs.

That said, drink good tequila like fine brandy. Friend of mine in San Antonio got me some kind of primo reservo 2 kill ya that he got from some Mexican doctor he knows, seriously good booze

Found out the hard way that the more tequila you drink, hte more majik mushrooms you can eat. Strangely, the more mushrooms you eat, the more tequila you can drink. Interesting 48 hours, but since then, *any* tequila is not tolerable.

"Chinaco"

i agree that just b/c something is labeled silver, it does not signify that it's inferior to a reposado. i like to taste test like-with-like, and chinaco's reposado makes patron taste like dishwater.

patron is good when you're in a bar that doesn't stock many brands and it invariably ends up being their top selection. try 'em out and see for yourself, but they're not cheap. many have "single malt" (or higher) prices.

i've heard good things about casa noble just haven't come across it yet to try. we'll see.

Great thread!! I work in Mexico often and always bring back the limit. This trip was 1ltr Centario Reposido (my fave in the reasonably priced class) 1ltr Antiguo, 1ltr Ron Flor de Cana rum (Nicaraguan) and a 3ltr bottle of Dom Ramon Reposido. This always helps fuel a get together with friends. The 3ltr bottle looks great on the bar too.

Homemade Mezcal! Hmmmm, brother Katch, do tell more, we could swap links on recipys and hardware.

I like any Tequila made from blue agave. All of the "upper shelf" Tequilas I've tasted are good, but they each have their own characteristics.

I've never made it - my experience was like this: The wife and I went to Oaxaca Mexico about four years ago. We wandered in to a beauty contest - let ourselves in to experience some culture. Some guy offers my wife some home made Mezcal in a large Seven-Up bottle - I had some to. One little sip warmed you up so much you felt faint and started to sweat like you were bitten by a snake or something.

The guy kept on smiling the whole time, took us a while to make it back to the cassa.
