Jewish cartoonists.... swallow your pride and stick to them

This should probably be added to the Muslim thread below. I am sorry if the topic is offensive, but we (the West) have to show Iran and other extremist Muslims that we value freedom of speech no matter how offensive it might be. I would love for a Jewish cartoonist to win that contest. I know it's horribly offensive, but what can we do?

I hope that my intent on this post isn't misinterpreted. I know the Holocaust isn't something to be joked with.

IRAN'S largest selling newspaper announced today it was holding a contest on cartoons of the Holocaust in response to the publishing in European papers of caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed.
"It will be an international cartoon contest about the Holocaust," said Farid Mortazavi, the graphics editor for Hamshahri newspaper - which is published by Teheran's conservative municipality.

He said the plan was to turn the tables on the assertion that newspapers can print offensive material in the name of freedom of expression.

"The Western papers printed these sacrilegious cartoons on the pretext of freedom of expression, so let's see if they mean what they say and also print these Holocaust cartoons," he said.

Iran's fiercely anti-Israeli regime is supportive of so-called Holocaust revisionist historians, who maintain the systematic slaughter by the Nazis of mainland Europe's Jews as well as other groups during World War II has been either invented or exaggerated.

Iran's hardline President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad prompted international anger when he dismissed the systematic slaughter by the Nazis of mainland Europe's Jews as a "myth" used to justify the creation of Israel.

Mr Mortazavi said tomorrow's edition of the paper will invite cartoonists to enter the competition, with "private individuals" offering gold coins to the best 12 artists - the same number of cartoons that appeared in the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten.

Last week, the Iranian foreign ministry also invited British Prime Minister Tony Blair to Teheran to take part in a planned conference on the Holocaust, even though the idea has been branded by Mr Blair as "shocking, ridiculous, stupid".

Mr Blair also said Mr Ahmadinejad "should come and see the evidence of the Holocaust himself in the countries of Europe", to which Iran responded by saying it was willing to send a team of "independent investigators".

While it may not be something to be joked with, I suspect that any Jews who are offended will refrain from firebombing embassies.

What does Iran hope to achieve other than clearly illustrating to the world the difference between the civilized and the un-civilized? Not sure how the arab world will come out ahead on this one.

Nobody will riot. Why would the Jews in general or the Israelis in particular get upset if the Iranian papers print stuff like this again. Granted, they have not had a contest with cash prizes for the best Holocaust Cartoon, but this is not the first time this has been said by any one of the leaders in that part of the world. This is no joking matter.

Having said that, a good friend of mine with named Westerfield used to always tell this. "You know my father died in a concentration camp?" Of course the response to this is always a sensitive, no, I am so sorry or something like that(I suppose if he were a Palestinian school child he would say, "There were never any concentration camps." or "Good, he is in hell now with all the other infidels") Westerfield would then say, "Yeah, he fell out of a guard tower." I must confess, I laughed hard when the fat bastard first told it. He was a funny guy, but I never remember Rich or Barry(couple of Jewish guys, Rich is a Racer, run with a few of his P-cars)even getting pissed. Barry's wife, she was another matter, but she was annoying, always acted like it was the first time she ever met my wife. After about the 3rd time Barry would just roll his eyes when she did it.

Let's see if I've got this right. Danish guy draws cartoon of Mohammed. Iranian president retaliates by trying to piss off Israel, a neighbor country with a long memory, the best per capita military in the world, and nuclear weapons. If that isn't enough, we'll just call the big guy for another plague.

Will you people never learn? I see a future with a good home for the Palestians in occupied Iran.

I'm down with funny cartoons no matter who or what they depict. The unfortunate part about this is, that it's unlikely they'll pick the "funniest" one, but rather the one that rips on jews and the holocaust the most.

After WW2 religion was manipulated by the CIA, Israel, Saudi Araba, etc for various reasons. Pan Arabism was a fear during the cold war and instilling politics into religious beliefs was a method of creating discontent in the mid-east. It worked.

Religion and politics don't mix well.. generally.

There is a difference.

Taking offence to depictions of a non existent god or prophet is bull*****. I don't care if you're imaginary god is christian, muslim or jewish.

Making fun of a situation where millions of REAL PEOPLE where rounded up and murdered is something all together different. Allah needs to pull his head in a little.
