Need a good wine
Want to get my girlfriend a nice bottle of white wine for v-day this week. I know she's partial to Pinot Grigio. Wondering if anyone had some suggestions on something she might like.
Thanks! |
It's all Bush's fault! The world's going to hell in a handbasket, the sky is falling, global warming, terrorism, it's all Bush's fault.
Oh.. wait... you said WINE, not WHINE... my bad. |
How much do you want to spend?

Is she "up" on a lot of obscure wines, or not. If not, Santa Margahrita Pinot Grigio is very popular with the ladies, and can be found very easily.
As for white, I like "Big House White", but the screw top might raise a brow. It's not gas station wine, it just has a screw top. Otherwise, "120" Chardonnay is very nice for something with a cork. Fat Bastard Chardonnay is good too. |
She's not "into" wine, just likes a good glass once in a while. We're usually drinking $10/bottle stuff from the store. Usually a Mondavi or a Ecco Domani. If I could get something in the $30-40 range would be good.

I don't know how much you want to look, but a 1/2 bottle (375ml) of French Sauternes is always a treat. No younger than 99 though. Or in the same vein a 1/2 bottle of Canadian (or the rarer German) Ice Wine - Riesling if you can find it but Vidal is OK.
Both are very sweet - served chilled - before or after dinner. Yum yum. Ian |
You didn't specify a budget. Don't know grigios to well.
Stags leap chard is excellent, but it runs about $30. Toasted Head (R.H. Phillips) makes solid wines in the $10-15 range. Grigio is sweeter than chards, so maybe look at a white zinfandel? |
You can't go wrong with good Sparkling wine or Champagne. Most anything over $30 a bottle should work. Never buy cheap sparkling wine. Never.
Pinot Grigio or Pinot Gris are outstanding wines, but more suited to warmer weather in my opinion. If you want a crisp, refreshing White, then a good White Burgundy can't be beat - but good ones tend to be a bit pricy - at the upper end of your budget+. As an alternative, there are a million wonderful New Zealand Sauvingnon Blac from the Marlborough region. Whilst most will have screw caps as their standard, don't be put off by this - though opening it is not nearly as fun. As Ian suggested, a Sauternes is wonderful as well. But you can't go wrong with Champagne. We open a bottle as an appetizer wine all the time. If you are set on a Gris, suggest you look for Oregon labels. Have Fun! |
Any bottle from Australia...;)

A chilli bottle of Trimbach Gewurztraminer is always a hit on a wrm eve before dinner.

I thought this was another post from a Seattle fan.:D Get her a nice Chardonnay with a high alcohol content (13-14%). Once she starts to enjoy those, it will make the lower alcohol content white wines, (White Zin:( Riesling, etc) taste downright sugary. The next step is to get into Reds. We only drink an occasional glass of white wine on hot summer days now. Only Reds nowadays.

A nice puligny montrachet is good if she likes something a little more substantial than chardonnay.
Oliver Laflaive makes a nice wine with a wonderful honey finish (2000) |

Ive found Gewurztraminers a winner with the women, I keep a fairly inexpensive one on hand to throw in the chiller if I find myself bringing someone home that night. Its excellent with asian food but is very well suited for a nice after dinner drink. |
