Need to run CAT 5 cable outside

Is the standard network cable rated for outdoors? I need to connect 100 ft from my router and wireless isn't working. I would like to run the cat5 across the roof as the attic is not an option. Located in SoCal. Thanks.

Put it in a piece of conduit or PVC tubing. Do not believe that its coating is designed for outdoor useage.

Yep, Cat 5 UTP must be protected in a conduit. I used PVC for the underground run to my garage 3 years ago and have not had a single problem.

Because it is not going to be buried, you might want to install STP (shielded twisted pair) as opposed to the more common UTP. This will prevent interference from local radio sources.

Damn shame thicknet went out of style...
