I might not ought to post this on a public forum, but some of you will appreciate this. I have made a new "friend" in the Chinese embassy who is rather senior there. Friday he took me to a long lunch where we had a free-for-all and very candid chat. He had printed out the Pentagon's QDR and asked me to explain some passages in it. Now, I'm sure this guy has been trained very well to make his questions not appear too formal or official, but some of it had to be pure ignorance and curiosity. He asked me all sorts of things like which books I recommend, which newspapers decision-makers in Wash. read, which are the finest restaurants in town, where to buy fine jewelry (he was blown away by my Breitling). Again, I know their embassy folks are trained. But I couldn't help but think they are just so clueless that we don't need to worry as much as we do. He had never heard of the Drudge Report. Believe it or not, I've met plenty of folks from other embassies whose job it is to know the American media culture, who have never heard of the Drudge Report. My Chinese friend went to grad school in the US and is no newcomer to Wash. DC. He was clueless!!!! On the other hand, I met a 23 yr. old girl in Chengdu (Sichuan Province) last year who spoke absolutely accentless American English and claimed to have never been outside China before. She had read almost every book I've read! I thought to myself, if their spies are this good, we are in trouble. The embassy guy calmed my fears though.
