Why is the center of the earth magma?

How does it get energy to stay hot? Its can't be free energy so I don't get it.

This should help: http://science.howstuffworks.com/volcano1.htm

TerryBPP 02-17-2006 07:11 AM

But what provides the gases? There is no induction of gases. So it only has a built up supply?

kach22i 02-17-2006 07:13 AM

I've read that the magma along with the moon and the oceans helps to create a cycle of oxygen and rain fall replenishment.

RickM 02-17-2006 07:19 AM

Let's see...as the plates move heat is creratet within the mantle and below to the core. Gas is released from existing pockets, created by the chemechanical process and vented along with the liquid magma.

DO I sound like I know what I'm talking about? :p

slakjaw 02-17-2006 07:23 AM

I thought it had to do with friction and pressure from gravity.

kach22i 02-17-2006 07:25 AM

Just remember most of the earth is cover by the oceans, and most of the volcanic activity is on the oceans floor. Talk about being under pressure!

Slow day at the office Terry? LOL...sorry, I just found it humorous for some reason. Not picking on you.

The center of the Earth is actually solid:

I thought it was leftover heat from when the planet was expelled from the cloaca of the Flying Spaghetti Monster?

magnetism, friction and gravity. Short answer

I know of this one dude who thinks the earth is hollow and that there are "inner earthlings"

One geophysicist, J. Marvin Herndon, has proposed the heat is a byproduct of radioactive decay in the mantle or core. In other words, the core is a big fission reactor. I suppose this is possible as the heavier elements would have 'settled to the bottom' as the earth was in formation.

I cannot remember his name.

He was on Coast to Coast one night.

He was planning an expedition to find the "entrance"

The atheist's prayer:

Dear Jesus/God/Allah/FSM

Please save me from your followers.

Amen

I read recently that the Earth's core is not rotating at the same rate as the Earth (don't remember if it is slower or faster). I thought that was interesting.

Faster....edit..
Quote:

Recent seismological studies have led some scientists to conclude that Earth's solid inner core rotates in the same direction as does Earth and slightly faster, completing its once-a-day rotation about two-thirds of a second faster than the entire Earth. Although this sounds like a small difference, it would mean that over the past 100 years the core has gained a quarter-turn on the planet as a whole. Such motion is remarkably speedy for geological processes, and would be about 100,000 times faster than the drift of the continents. Further studies could yield insights into heat flow and turbulence within Earth and the internal "dynamo" thought to be responsible for generation of Earth's magnetic field.

Someday the magna y'all will call homestead.
