Solar attic fans

Have any of you ever used one of these? I'm wondering if it is in the snake oil category. It is certainly a good idea, and I'd love to cool my attic during those lovely, hot and humid days here in New York.

Thanks.

You'd need to design the air flow, etc. around having them - there's been a recent thread on redoing windows, siding, and vents - lots of good info on it there.

I installed a ridge vent which is designed to draw hot air out by venturi effect using any breeze that happens to be going by or by simple convection if the air is absolutely still. No moving parts and no maintenance. Seems to work well for me. You might want to consider that.

I'll take a look at the other thread, thanks.

The ridge vent thing looks like I'd have to re-design my roof. From a DIY web site: "Installing ridge vents is a fairly aggressive project. Do not attempt this project if you are uncomfortable with heights or uncertain about your carpentry skills. Since you will be cutting the peak off your roof, this is not a project that can be left unfinished for any amount of time."

I have two air vents now, so switching to a fan doesn't seem like a bit deal. I would think that adding the fan would be a big help, especially if I don't have to pay for electricity to power them. Some of them are designed to turn on at 80 degrees and shut off at 70 degrees.
