Historian finds Nazi bunker at Normandy beach hidden for 60 + years!

Anyone into history, especially WW2 history will enjoy this.

A British history buff was in France and purchased an old WW2 soldiers map. On the map was various notes from the man who carried it. It also showed a Nazi bunker.

Gary Sterne then drove to the area, walked the fields and amonst the overgrown fields found some concrete that had been covered by soil and then farmed. He started looking around and found a WW2 bunker that had not been disturbed since the end of the invasion in 1944. Imagine something like this sitting under everyone's noses for 60 years!

He found the entire underground bunker as it was left a few days after the invasion, with personal items in the bunks, food in the kitchen and maps and codebooks in the radio room. It evidently had not been found by anyone since the Germans left. This was in 2002.

He then quietly started buying the farmland and now owns the property. Working with the local city people, he has been cleaning it up and plans on opening it up this year for historical tours.

Sooooo cool! I love this stuff.

I climbed the fence at an abandoned Soviet air base in the middle of nowhere in eastern Germany a few yrs. ago and was in hog heaven. There were still lessons written on the chalkboards in the school, plenty of papers laying around, old car parts in the motorpool. It was so cool. Below is one of the earth-covered hangars.

One small difference is that no one was looking for these bunkers. Not an army, not teams of international inspectors, no one. And no leader started a major military conflict using the unproven existence of said bunker as justification. Other than that, perfect analogy as usual.

Seahawk and the rest of the guys with normal comments, this blew me away as well as you always wonder if there is a bunker or place like this that has not been found, and here we have one.

Am in Egypt right now and they just found another place with more mummies there, like King Tut was found in the 1930's. Supposed to be at least 4 chambers with loads of treasures and such.

Just goes to show that when we feel that everything has been done or found, there just may be more out there.

Seahawk, I was at the 50th anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy. Very moving site and experience for me, as I have friends who fought there. One was a paratrooper who dropped in the night before (101st Airborne) to harass the Nazi's as the landings occured. Lots of history there and let us know what you find. I would love to go to this site and explore but will be back in CONUS by the time its open.

Joe

I have to add that when I was stationed in Berlin, I became friends with some guys who worked for the German govt. Being at the rod and gun club a lot does that.

They worked for the govt to find old WW2 stuff which was everywhere. They took metal detectors out and found old arms, ammo and bombs. One week one of them called a friend of mine and asked if we were interested in "something special" so to speak. They had found a couple of MG-34's. If you do not know what they are, you do not need to ask.

Within 2 days the police were knocking on their doors and siezed the weapons. Needless to say, they are not working at the same place these days, but there are still weapons like this out there in the field, found new in the box or in a bunker.

Joe, there was an MG-34 at the last gun show here for around $30k. The guy's MP-40 was $17k.

Another guy had a crate full of consecutive serial numbered and unfired Walther P-38's, still with the wax paper and manifest stuck to the top of the crate with the Reichsadler and Hakenkreauz stamp.

Not many people know what a hakenkreauz is. A find like this is excellent.

Hope you are coming to Vegas. We need to share some time with a drink and cigar!

Count on it. All of my relatives were in the Pacific theater (quiet, but funny and personable men), but the Maisy Battery is something I want to see.

From the sea, can you imagine?
