Sprained my right ankle in 81 when I was 21 jumping off a forklift. I was on crutches for a week. Fast forward to the mid 90's and I sprained the same ankle again. I kept it elevated and iced. One week later I was o/k. The one thing I remember was it hurt like hell in the morning. No problems once it healed.

LOL I went to a podiatrist last month., i was having some pain on top of my heel. Turns out I have some "castles" built up where the achillies tendon attaches.
But, here's the fully part....... they took x-rays of both ankles and the doc asked who the quack was that set the breaks. I said huh? what breaks?
Turns out that I broke both ankles pretty badly some time ago, prolly when I used to climb off my desert motorcycle in 6th gear. The breaks were really obvious on the x-rays, I could see them from 10- feet away and my eyes aren't that good. I never even realized they were broken, prolly just thought I sprained em.

The doc asked if I had any problems with my knees or back that might be caused by the improper fusion of the bones, I said my back and left knee are just fine after the operations.
What I wouldn't give to be 22 years old and bullet-proof again. Back then the only thing I was afraid of was kryptonite ;)

If it's just a "sprain" and you are in that much pain, stay off your feet and have your Doctor prescribe a pain killer that'll help you until the healing process begins.

Just don't pull a Rush Limbaugh...some of those pain killers are FUN....

Pain in the A$$..... isn't it....

I would be dubious about the "flake"being an old injury. You can avulse a piece off the inferior aspect of your fibula(outside of ankle) when the ligament pulls a piece of bone off. The idea with a soft cast, is that it will give more than a plaster or fiberglass cast, but still provide some immobilization, and will also allow some comression. Nice thing about a soft cast, is the patient can remove it themselves if it becomes too tight, tough to do at home with a hard cast. I typically put the soft cast on for a week, then a hard cast for a few weeks and gradually progress to bearing weight.

Mobic is an anti-inflammatory med, like aspirin or ibuprofen. Take it with food and plenty of fluids. Elevate your foot higher than your hips, if you were wearing a pair of boots full of water, the water should run up your leg. Ice packs, 30 min on, 30 min off while you are awake. Handle of the crutches should hit mid wrist when standing with them under your arms, a few fingers space between armpit and crutch. Weigh goes on your hands, not your armpits or your hands will go numb.

Where it hurts and the mechanism of injury are crucial to diagnosing an ankle injury. For example, did you roll the foot in or out, or did the foot fold under you. If the pain feels if it is actually in the ankle, deep in there, it is possible you had an injury to your talar dome(cartilage covered part of bone inside your ankle), you can also get a lot of pain in front of and below the bone on the outside of your ankle, which may indicate a problem in the joint below your ankle, particularly if you get pain when you try to turn your heel outward.

Pain after an injury like yours will tend to get worse for the first 48-72 hours, then taper off, but just because it feels better, does not mean it is. Broken bones in your foot take 6-8 weeks to heal enough to walk on, depending on the orientation/stability of the fracture. Sfot tissue injuries can take longer, lots longer, or may only get so much better. Use your crutches, do what they tell you to do.

thanks! i will

Tobra sounds about right but the level of pain should be cause for greater concern. I would suggest a simple blood test to determine if the cause of the inflamation is due to the injury or something else. Remember, treat your body like you treat your car.

RICE. . . Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation. For almost all "sprains" compression feels good, not bad. The fact that you still feel pain is not a good sign. Go find another doctor.
