LA Traffic...
Yesterday it took me 23 minutes to get to work.
Today it took me 105 minutes to get to work. I would insert a mad face here : ![]() But I'd have a heart attack before I was 30. Instead of letting it "bug" me, I will insert a cool face: ![]()

105 minutes??? Phil, I'd say you need a change of scenery. That's no way to spend your life, brutha.

Reminds me of working outside of DC. I lived 4 miles from my front door to the office, took a minimum of 45 mins, regardless if I took Rt 1 or I95. Had to leave the office no later than 3:00 PM on Fridays or just stay until around 6:00 PM. I like me nice slow pace of life on the Carolina coast now.

Are you saying your normal commute is 105 minutes? It actually sounds about right for So Cal.

My commute is hell and it's only getting worse. I live 5 miles from the Vienna Metro and it takes me about 30 min. to get there on the hwy. Then I have a 35 min. ride on the train IF it doesn't break down. I cannot wait to get out of here.

Exactly, Thom... About three years ago, I gave up on driving around LA. Have commuted on a bike ever since. Meant leaving a suitcase and clothes at work. Meant planning which bike to take. Yes, meant using the Prius (just me in the carpool lanes) to go in on bad weather days in SoCal (11 days a year). Meant watching my fuel bill drop by 60%. Meant arriving home with a smile on my face. Meant being able to reasonably plan commute times. 4am commute time for my 28 mile drive is 28 minutes. That time in a car during rush hours can be anywhere from 45 minutes to 3 hours. On the bike is anywhere from 28 minutes to 45 minutes max. |

I live on the westside and split my work between downtown and marina del rey. MDR is a 10 minute drive max with no traffic. But can easily take 45 minutes at the wrong time of day.
Well, except on the bike. The only downside is the fwy construction has resulted in them shrink the lanes down so splitting can be a challenge. My 12" Powerbook fits in my tank bag, and I leave a pair of shoes at work. My pants and jacket fit over my work clothes so no worry there (not corporate so no suits). Plus I'm off-grid while I'm riding...if the cell phone rings it goes to voice mail. Kinda relaxing... |

. Two years ago I drove my pickup from the SF Bay Area down to LA to buy/load-up a gray market motorcycle. A fellow moto buddy from LA met me there, some where near LAX, at 9:00 a.m. on a Sat. morning. After loading up, I invited him to lunch on my way out of town. . So there we were, dragging along on some SoCal smog-engulfed, stinking-to-high-heaven, 4 lane Hwy., him on his Ducati next to me, and me clutching along in 1st gear. About 30 minutes and a few miles into this scenario, I holler over to him, "What's up? Accident ahead? Lakers playing near here this evening?" Him: "Nope. This is Sat. morning LA traffic." FM!

Three of the reasons why I left LA area
1. TOOO many people, translates to too many people on the road 2. CA politics is in the hands of people who have no conception of the effects of their policys...Liberal whackos who will endorse any lifestyle except that of making money..which they think is evil. 3. Really a colloraryof number 2.. the Gun Control laws are really nuts..the Liberals have seemingly given up on outright bans, but they continually add more and more regulations which make it tougher and tougher to comply with

I'm outa Kalifornia soon, myself.
Getting estimates on interior painting and general clean-up - for selling. Oh, and folding my business too, Arnold. Taking my $1.6 million+ net equity and heading out - leaving a vapor trail. . 'A shame what has happened to this once-beautiful state in just the past 10 years. And it appears to be spreading across America - coming to a state near you. In spite of Prop. 13, my property taxes increased by ~80% in past 10 years via "School Bond Measures", etc. Hasta la vista, progressive MF'rs!!! You can have it.
