Networking Geniuses!

I've got a problem for you networking geniuses.

I have two computers (or--this problem involves two computers):

1) A Pentium 4 running Windows XP Pro
2) A Pentium 2 running Windows 2000

I want to turn computer #2 into a file server. I want to map its hard drive as network drive on computer #1. I've given unique names to the two computers, set up the appropriate protocols, created a workgroup that both computers belong to, and shared #2's hard drive.

I can see #2 on the network from #1, but I cannot see its hard drive, nor map it.

What can I do to make this work?

You need to share the drive. The drive itself is already shared as a hidden share called 'C$'. You could map to \\computer2\c$.

It may be preferable to create a folder and share the folder so that you can get a nice clean view of just your data. Create the folder, then share it. You right click on the folder, and select Properties. From the dialog box, select the share tab. From this tab, select the check box to share the folder. It will default to the folder name for the share name. On a Win2k box, that should be all you have to do unless their is a third party firewall product running.

Map to \\computers2\newsharedfolder

HardDrive is right on the secret Microsoft mapping... Also make sure both computers have the same user accounts. Makes things much easier. But why am I answering this? I'm on a mini vacation!!!

Good luck, hope one of these methods work for you.

Dave

Yes, right click and share the folder, make sure your work group has permissions on the security tab

open windows exploder on machine 1

tools->map network drive

//servername or ip address/share name

That will be $100. My weekend rate is cheap

You could throw a /persistent:yes in there as well if you were so inclined.

The problem was the firewalls on both computers. Darn ZoneAlaram! I've added all of the possible IP addresses from my router to the "trusted zones" on each computer. Everything works now!
