Too big to fail

Jobs white people won't do...
I had a disappointing experience last week. One of my neighbors, a high school educated (I think) white guy, was whinging about being unemployed, and he apparently has been for a while. I know the owners of a couple of 'glass fab shops, and told him I could make some calls, and he seemed enthusiastic about the prospect. I hooked him up with one that would take him on as basic entry-level labor for $10/hr. On the day he was supposed to start, he balked, saying he couldn't work for that. Where is he now? Unemployed, sitting on his ass at home. And I look like an ass for wasting their time sending them some slacker.

And people wonder why I would rather hire a hispanic laborer.
Lazy white people piss me off. I guess any lazy person pisses me off...

I think about this a lot. I think the folks on welfare, those who are able-bodied but won't work because they don't have to, are more of a drain on our society than undocumented workers. I also know a couple of guys who are on medical for supposed back pain so they don't work. Yet, I've seen them get on the floor to coach their kids' wrestling team.

i was a professional pilot..a seasoned learjet captain earning between 6-9k per month flying int'l air ambo missions. when i lost my medical, i found myself working bilingual customer service for qwest communications and cingular one..for $8.50 an hour. was *****ing about the pay to some of the others when i found out that i was the highest paid..everyone else was earning $7.50 (they were working english only). suddenly, i felt like 'king of the hill' again..lol.

When I was 16 yrs. old in 1987 I was making $7 per hour flipping burgers at the local Wendy's. We had negative unemployment in my town then. I was rich in those days.

So, tell me,
Is the oh so popular phrase "We need these people because no one else (Americna citizens) will take these jobs" a bull$hit excuse? Does it truly have merit?

I really can't understand why we need immigrants to pick crops that get fed. subsidies to keep their prices high. Wouldn't it be better to hire Americans, pay them more, end the subsidies and get the same price?

The people that are up for the low paying jobs don't seem to have what it takes to perform the most simple tasks reliably. I think the idea of a 'job' and the concept of 'work ethic' were lost some time recently.

If less hand outs were available perhaps the people that won't take the jobs would have to rethink.

I blame alot of it on the lazy, spoiled little brats that we are raising these days. They dont know the value of work and are afraid to get their hands dirty. Mom and dad hand them everything, when they get out of school they expect to be the CEO of the company they work for.
Nobody wants to start from the bottom anymore.

Maybe we need a good old fashioned depression to bring this country into line again with what the value of a days work really is.
Not that I would know, I'm barely in my 30s. Lawnwork is not to good for me, I do my own. I'd do the construction if I could and had the time - as it stands now I ask contractors if they hire illegals because I can't support that practice (ethics) and when they say yes I have to pass on them. Which basically means nothing gets done at my house.

My son went into the city a few months ago, staying with his cousin and looking around for work. He grabbed a job with a cleaning company. When we asked him why he jumped on that, his response was,"I was offered a job inside with reasonable pay. I asked myself,'What would my grandfather think of me if I turned it down?' I know he didn't always have the choice."
Les By the way, Rick Lee, the subsidies paid to farmers to raise certain crops increases the return to the farmers and keeps the cost to the consumer low. If you added a higher wage to that mix, you would increase the cost to the farmer again. If you wanted to sell it on the open market, you would have to increase the subsidy. If I was a farmer, I don't think I would go for your suggestion. Les

Funny thing, the other day , I'm driving behind this van with "Buy Union"
"Support Union workers" Buy American" stickers all over the back of his van. Plus a bout 20 American flags stuck all over it. The guy pulls over, at a spot where all these "day laborers" (illegal immigrants). stand on the corner., and he picks 3 of them up. The guy gives me a nasty look after I yell out the window and call him a f*ckin hypocrite. That just totally burned my as*!

I may sound like a grumpy old man, but I think kids are spoiled. Cable TV, an Ipod and a cell phone appear to be a right in this day and age. They get an 'allowance' which, adjusted for inflation, was probably more than I earned in a month back then.
I was at a restaraunt a while back, and this girl who couldn't have been more than 10 had her own cell2phone, and was carrying on her own conversation in the middle of dinner! There's a bunch of teenage kids in my neighborhood that all hang out at one particular house. During the summer, they sit around, drink beer, smoke various substances, and generally b!tch about not having money. All day long. I tried employing a couple of them for various tasks when I was building my shop, ie painting, drywall work, moving stuff. None of them would last more than an hour before they were whining "I gotta go; I'm [tired|sore|hungry|have a 'thing']" I got my first job when I was 12. My dad told me I wouldn't be sitting on my ass all summer, and that I could either go work for someone else for money, or work for him for free. After a couple weeks of splitting firewood, digging postholes, etc. I got a job in a packing shed doing similar stuff, but for $2/hr under the table. The next year I got a job driving tractors doing other random farming-related tasks. I got my first programming job when I was 15; $11/hr but I was da pimp next to my peers; those chumps were making $3.35 working at the truck stop or warehouse. I was unemployed for a couple months last year, and I did some onesey-twosey welding jobs and learned how to do fiberglass fabrication as opposed to sitting on my ass whinging and collecting unemployment. Long story short, there doesn't appear to be much of a work ethic in anyone under 25 (semi-random number), and the "only Mexicans will do it" has become a self-fulfilling prophecy.
