Selling the 911 - Does the ad read ok?
 

I am selling my 911 and put the ad up on craigslist and pelicanparts. I've gotten no emails about it yet (listed for about a week) so I want to ask if my ad reads ok? Is the price too high? BTW, I'm targeting out of state buyers since the car cannot pass CA smog with the Euro engine.:

Sorry to see it (and you) go. Nice car. Two concerns, though: Salvage title and no smog possible in CA. Plus, it's a '76 (first year of no smog in CA), and some might not care for the mods or the interior.

Not trying to be a naysayer here, but your price might be a bit high.

Give it a while, and see what kind of bites you get.

A couple of things jump out at me Matt.

"I'm pretty sure the previous owner rebuilt both."

Buyers want surety if nothing else.

Also, the smog issue. Clearly it's a gorgeous car (except BBS as note), so as a buyer, I'm wondering why you don't just drop a different engine in it and keep the car. And for someone out of state, how can you have owned it for 1.5 years, why the trouble now with the smog stuff?

lastly, why does it have a salvage title?

It's a beautiful car for someone, but I'm afraid someone with $12K and set of 7x9's sitting in storage.

Nice looking Pcar. I too was forced to sell out of state b/c of smog. I would like to see more facts, not your opinions of facts. Lay out the details. Your list cannot be too long.

As to the price, I sold my 78 SC with a hot 3.6 convesion for $19k.

You don't mention if the top is fully functional. I have seen cabrio-lized targas where there is no top, just a tonneau cover--may help you sell if you clarify this.

The part that says "has a 1978 3.0 lite European engine with 47K miles and the transmission has around 20K miles. I'm pretty sure the previous owner rebuilt both." does not make me feel secure.

If you don't have reciepts on the rebuild, consider it never rebuilt.

I agree w/ most of the other comments.

The salvage title turns off many prospective buyers, and those who it doesn't turn off are not willing to pay as much as if it were a clean title (because they know when it comes time for them to sell they would get less for it).

It sounds like there is no way to verify the mileage on the engine, or rebuild history... so thats a 'neutral' point i.e. doesn't really add value. It looks like the car doesn't have Carrera chain tensioners fitted, which does cast some doubt on the rebuild (in the vast majority of rebuilds this would typically be done at that time, if they hadn't already been fitted). The 3.0 SC engine is a plus overall though (over the original 2.7).

The "painted very close to an "Indian/Gaurds Red" comment is a little off-putting.

Most (but not all) buyers would prefer Fuchs... so would probably figure in the cost to get a nice set of 7's & 8x16's into what they would pay.

Smog is a huge issue. Targeting out of state buyers with a modified car like this is difficult- the further from stock the car is the more important it is to see it in person.

What exactly would you need to do get the car smog compliant in CA? If this is going to cost you, say, $1500 or less I think it would be worth it!

As it is, with the right buyer I think $12,000 might be possible if you are very patient. $17,000 is 1977 930 money (for a clean titled car)!

Matt - it pases emissions yet you still have to get rid of her? Are you thinking that it will fail next year? I am not sure I fully understand.

Also, did you do the wheel flares or were they on it when you bought the car?

it's a sub-$10K car imho. Agree with all the above comments. I'm not sure I'd put any money into it though, as there are some things that you cannot overcome (the salvage title, cab/turbo-look conversion).

The car does look nice, although what wheel/tire size is up front? It looks lost in the wide fender...and are the flares metal or fg?

Oh ya for what it is worth as long as we are providing constructive criticism, your add reads way too passive and wishy-washy. I would not mislead a prospective buyer but I am certain that the copy could be tightened up to read better and provide some additional enticement.

If you put it on e-bay, try to get a local honey or two to pose with it in a skimpy swim suit. Visit your local strip joint and for $5 you could take your pick. $25 would bring about a quick date and $100 would make you a happy man - forgetting about getting rid of your ride.

You can even make up a story about how 17 year old sweetie’s like the bottom buzz they get from the vibration of the engine when you "drive" them to school and that you have to sell the car because your manhood is getting over worked and is now in pain and in need of a rest from all the attention the co-eds are giving you!

BTW - for $4/word and 5% of the net sale, I will write an ad that will bring some hits!

Looks like it would make a good 3.2/3.6L conversion candidate, which if done by the rules eliminates the smog issues.
