Who is that famous Japanese director?

Once again testing the PPOT brain trust knowledge of obscure trivia... Who is that famous Japanese director that did all those Samaria movies?
I saw PBS is going to do a special on him and I wanted to buy his DVD collection before he got even more famous.

TIA,

Scott

If you are going to "buy his DVD collection" "before he got even more famous", 1 you are probably too late, and 2 you'd better be prepared to buy lots of movies. He made a lot of movies. I think he made movies starting in the 50's or 60's and was still making movies in the 90's. There are a ton.

Check this out for a list of stuff he's written, directed, etc....

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000041/

I'm betting that you'd need $300-700 to buy all of his stuff.

I think Ai Kurosawa's work is much better.

And this is going to be a good weekend in SoCal to stay in and watch them all.

Have taken the slack out of the dock lines, put pans under the two portholes that leak in the heavy rain, and told the GF she will not need any clothes for the weekend camp-in at the boat.

Not a bad idea singpilot... got a new lady I have been working on... maybe a good time to grab a bottle of saki and see if she wants to camp out.

I was thinking, "hmm, those names look familiar and I don't think they are famous for 'directing'."

Good one.

Sergio Leone copied (stole) Kurosawa's Yojimbo word for word to make Fistful of Dollars and Sturges' The Magnificent Seven was copied (inspired) from Kurosawa's Seven Samurai and George Lucas admits the original Star Wars story came from Kurosawa's Hidden Fortress.

BTW the best samurai films were not made by Kurosawa. Try Throne of Blood or any of the Zatoichi films.
