Poll: Views on Polygamy?

I'm in New Orleans and watching in my hotel room an A&E show on polygamy in Utah/Colorado. I don't see the big deal, I'm personally not for it, and wouldn't be interested. But where is it the gubmits business. I mean if they just live together, no laws are broken, even if they have lots of kids. Why does a marriage license between a man and several women, or a women and several men for that matter make it a crime, other than the gubmit saying so?

I agree with you , Hugh. Who cares what they do,as long as it is not illegal. It's not for me. Who would want more than one woman nagging at you? Sheesh.

You reap what you sew.

Besides, isn't there a "synchronization" effect when several women live together, making one week of each month total hell?

Hugh R 03-13-2006 05:38 PM

Oh Haha

That's the point, it is illegal.

Legion

Just what I need 3 or 4 or in the case of one guy on this show 15 wives. Imagine all of them with PMS at the same time! Yikes

Oh Haha 03-13-2006 05:41 PM

Isn't it legal in Utah?
How come there aint no hot chicks signing up for this?

I just turned on A+E.

He must be a happenin' dude!!

Each wife comes equiped with another mother-in-law.

AFJuvat 03-13-2006 06:12 PM

I personally don't see a problem with it if everyone is agreeable.

There are times that my wife is more vexing than a toothache... I couldn't imagine having two or more...

incest, welfare fraud, abuse, hey whats wrong with that?

Polygamy is cult behaviour in a religious guise.

Hugh R 03-13-2006 06:17 PM

Dave

You seem to think that cults and religion are different? Don't want to start a religious jihad here, cause that's not my forte, but isn't a cult a religion that doesn't have wide spread acceptance, or vice versa?

"A man doesn't necessarily have to be a polygamist to have one wife too many."

I have hard enough time keeping mine happy(and She's worth it). If they are all provided for then maybe they can deal with it. I have seen some shows depicting a man with multiple wives and children and he makes all but his favorite wife support that part of his family and raise his children. Leaving a woman with no support and multiple kids is pretty lame in my book. The women would come out better moneywise to get a divorce and child support. Eeeeeeeehhhhh whatever........

I attended Catholic school from Kindergarden to grade 13. In grade 13 I pushed the boundries and argued that catholosism was a cult. We had studied cults and leart that there are a number of signs of a cult, I cant remember them all but a few I still remember;

stock piling weapons
sleep deprevation / brain washing

While these certainly dont seem to fit "organized religion" a person would have a tough time arguing against the fact that the roman catholic church has a lot of power and its power can be demonstrated through out history. As far as sleep deprevation, No. But I belive sunday school and the involvement in the church before one can even form an opinion would certainly qualify.

Im not against religion, I think it has value and offers a great frame work to live well. The extreamists are the ones to worry about.

It seems like polygamy as its practiced in the US and Canada is great - if your a guy.

In BC we have a large commune/cult/church whatever you want to call it. Although most media go there with their mind made up and film as negative a segment as they can, the most compelling arguements against it are from kids who have 'escaped.'

What the rest of call rape, exploitation, subjugation, abuse, brainwashing is all part of the 'life' in a polygamist society. I've got no issue with adults in a consensual relationship with multiple wives but thats not the whole story. How would you like to have your daughter married off at 13 to some 50 yr old overweight fraud calling himself a prophet?

Interestingly there is an HBO series that debuted last night about just such a family.

Hugh R 03-13-2006 06:50 PM

Jorian

Agreed, the A&E special I was watching spoke alot about the father, uncle, cousin forced marriage thing. And lots of inbreed genetic problems. Like I said, not my cup of tea.

I read an interesting review of "Big Love". Haven't seen it yet, but gonna give it a try...

If polygamy were what a lot of you seem to be imagining, it would be a 'lifestyle choice.'

But in reality, often times some of the 'wives' are as young as 13 and 14 and are coerced into marrying by family pressure.

My grandfather had 3 wives under the same roof, big house. The youngest wife was younger than his oldest daughter, but i think she was in her 20s when they got married. They all lived a fairly harmonous life together. But he also had a bunch of dough to keep them all happy.

livi 03-14-2006 12:51 AM

Well, its illegal in Sweden. But since its legal for homosexuals to be married and raise children (abnormal in my opinion) - why the he11 should polygamy be illegal. Personally, if its a matter of adult consent - who cares.

VINMAN 03-14-2006 05:08 AM

One wife is way more than enough!!:D

Tervuren 03-14-2006 05:20 AM

If polygamy where legal, then I say no problem.

Here is the deal, what they are doing, is milking the government of money. Basicly, you have a bunch of single non working moms who are "wives" in reality, receiving welfare checks reguarly for every kid they have. They consider the government bad, and so don't care to rip it off of all the money they can get.

Even if they made polygamy legal, they would probably still stick to the current system of not being legaly married in the eyes of the government.
