Torn Between A 928S4 (5sp) & A E500 AMG..Pics..Comments?

Hey Gang - Some of you may remember that I was going to buy a Euro '85 5Speed that had been sitting for over 10years (the red one with the neat white leather interior).

I have decided to pass on it...as I feel it would be throwing good $$$ after bad.

I am now considering the very awesome '94 500E \ E500 Mercedes (W124 chassis code). The one that I have come across has been heavily upgraded with genuine Brabus parts and very nice 19" Speedlines. The owner of the car has a friend that works for Brabus in Germany and so he gets some neat Euro parts for the car, he is also very meticulous and fantaical with the car's maintenance, the car has 111K on the clock.

Some of you may know, but this is the same car that was built as a collaboration between Porsche and Mercedes, this was the only collabo. between these two car companies. The engine is 5L 32V Porsche designed and assembed engine and is mated to a Benz 4speed auto. This is a rare car with only about 1800 ever imported to the US. Stock is 315hp, but this one is putting about 340hp with the upgrades.

For the $$$ I could get a '90-'91 S4...which would you guys choose, am I asking the obvious by posting this on a 928 list?

Here is the Benz:

Here I am asking a serious question, and I get a STUPID reply.

Please chime in if you have something of value to say.

Thanks.

It really wasn't a stupid reply. That Benz looks like a full on pimpmobile. Just add neon.

you asked for opinions. *I* think the benz looks ridiculous. If I saw someone driving it I would think they desperately wanted to be a "playah."

but ymmv. If you don't want to hear negative opinions, you shouldn't ask in a public forum. My first comment was somewhat in jest, but given your response, maybe it wasn't.

It's just the silly wheels and rubber band tires. Put some normal, period correct AMG wheels on it and it'd be fine.

I think the Mercedes is a very different car than the 928. Do you need to carry luggage or passengers?

and while I'm on a roll, wtf is up with with high HP sedans? They will never see the potential of the engine, and will likely never see the track. So what is the point? To impress other guys while standing around having a beer? To go 140mph for half a mile on a deserted stretch of highway? For driving on the autobahn (yeah, like we'll fly it over for a quick spin)?

I just don't get it...

I beg to differ...

Seriously, doesn't look that bad to me...

You guys are so out of touch, all the pimps, gangstars, and rappers are driving lowers Escalades and Hummers with spinners.

MB's are so 2001 for the pimp my ride crowd.

Get the 500, find some proper looking wheels through AMG, and sell off the rims on it now. Then address the mirrors.

Egad... didn't even notice the mirrors... or the crome Q-ball stick shift... but still with some tastfull and inexpensive mods it would be a very nice car IMHO.

It always me amazes me the shallowness of some members on this board.

I posted the same question on Rennlist and received only 100% interesting and intelligent feedback.

Yes I asked for feedback, but based on ownership, personal experience and overall feedback.

That E500 does not have neons, spinner 22" chrome wheels, a trunk full of fiberglass moulded subs or wings larger than a commercial jet - so how is it playah, gangstar or pimp?

The wheels on that car are very high end 3piece Speedlines. The suspension is all H&R...the car is tastefully done and well presented. I would not consider the car if it was not.

You guys who think that high horsepower only should live in 2 door sports cars, need to realize that there are 400+ hp station wagons you can now buy...keep an open mind for crying out loud it is 2006.

High power 4door sedans have existed for ever.... think the muscle car period here in the US and the 350SEL 6.3 of yesteryear...this is not a recent thing.

4door cars can be fun....give yourself a shake....

Yasin

P.S: The mirrors have been reverted back to the OEM units.

If you can't see it for yourself, no one can explain it to you. That is the nature of bad taste. Not surprised you got a more favorable reaction on Rennlist.

As the owner of a 310HP station wagon and a 300HP sedan, there is nothing wrong with four doors and fast.

i like fast sporty sedans. i want a new M3 bad!

i dont like that MB that much. it does look like the previous owner needed to stop a few mods back. that car have a "bumpin" stereo system? what about a pic of the potential 928?

It does look like a pimp mobile. A high class pimp mobile though. I'd take it if it were free, throw some LCD screens in the dash and head rests and your rollin legit yo.

I think that answers your question. You seem to really want the E500...go for it. It'd be my choice of the two, with a few small changes to suit my taste.

I'm of the age that appreciates large wheels. I like some styles also, the new 911 wheels come to mind. I'm just not a particular fan of this pattern. It's clear that they're nice and expensive wheels. I just think a 17" or so AMG star pattern would suit the car better.

If you like handling and silver star look for a 190e 16V amg. I drove one and loved its high reving, style, and comfort. I would have bought it if it didn't have a undetermined engine noise.

That e500 is a tank. And if engine trouble comes your way you'll wish you bought a Ford. Trust me I had a 99' S500 for a year and a half.
