British Posting on BBS, Punctuation!!

I cut this out of an Aston Martin BBS where I post. They were discussing a stupid street race video and I thought you might find (in all seriousness) the posting regarding each others punctuation and grammer. Hope you can follow it. AZ and XY are names that I "changed" to protect the posters. The last post is mine.

AZ

Half way through that videio I thought to myself 'It's all going to end in brown trousers'.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
XY

Spelling, missing comma AZ.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

AZ

Phew! I was waiting for that... Fortunately, I had merely copied someone else's post (mea culpa for not bothering to spell check)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
XY

So, are you saying, "It wasn't me, it was the other guy."?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

AZ

The post was under my name so I have to take the rap.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

AZ

And I ought to check-read the post before hitting 'Post'

(Yes, I know it is not good style to start a sentence with 'And')

And I thought of correcting the original posting, but that would spoil the sense of the thread.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
XY

You should just be more careful in the future

I can't say that I've ever been on a bulletin board system were posters correct each others grammer and punctuation. Oh, I forgot, your British. :) Back on topic, unfortunately, its usually not those kinds of idiots who get killed; they end up killing someone else. (Should that have been a comma, or a semicolon?)

I don`t mean to act british, but it spells grammar, not grammer . ;)

Aurel

Aurel 03-18-2006 04:24 PM

Oops, forgot the space after my comma.

Wow, two Frenchmen telling an American about English grammar!

It's "you're English"...

just kidding :D ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;)

Hugh R 03-18-2006 04:37 PM

Aurel, its British, not british, unless of course your French, in which case your allowed.

Aurel 03-18-2006 04:48 PM

Well of course, british, just like bush, spells with a little b when you are French. SmileWavy

Well there you are, the "I hate Bush" posting. Funny, I think someone missed posting that on "The Fastest Indian" thread. I better double check though, I might have missed it. Actually, I'm liking Bush less and less every week.

By the way, Hugh, most of the instances of "your" that you're using should be "you're"--as in "you are". ;)

masraum 03-18-2006 07:00 PM

XY was being an @ss. Yes, I've seen spelling, punctuation and grammar corrected here before, but I don't remember it ever being done as obnoxiously as what you posted.

You're right, :) But its only one post, not "most".

StevoRocket 03-19-2006 01:20 AM

A comma is not required before the word "but".

Well, in this case you wanted to use "it's", as in "it is".

Then there's this post too:

Misuse of the apostrophe is my pet peeve! :D

"its" = possessive
"it's" = contraction of "it is"

Yes, I'm being a *****. ;) I really don't give a crap on BBS postings. I do make an effort to try to be correct in my own writing, though.

An ex-fiancé of mine spoke beautiful and perfect English - she also had a HUGE vocabulary.
Laced with sarcastic and clever humor, her speech was entertaining...the only thing about her I miss.
.
She would freely correct my English...one frequent error of mine was using "lay" when "lie" was correct, etc.
It was easy to be corrected by her because of her tone of voice and her choice of words when doing so.
.
I attended a Catholic Academy for my first 12 years of schooling where grammar/spelling was emphasized by the Sisters of St. Joseph. One of them used to say, "First we make habits, then our habits make us." (no pun intended)
I still make errors now/then, but they also taught that self-forgiveness is a good thing.
God bless their soles.

'twas a joke. :D
Droll humor 'n all that, ya know?!

Stephen 325TDS 03-19-2006 01:38 PM

Ah! I see. ;)

BlueSkyJaunte 03-19-2006 03:25 PM

And here I thought you were a foot wimp. ;)

Don Ro 03-19-2006 04:09 PM

No foot deal for me.
Their habits covered them from head to toe back in those days...except hands 'n face.
We used to call them Swamp Angels to ourselves...but a few were knockouts in their own pure way.
I had a mad crush on two of them in high school...made a fool of myself more than once. :o
.
I'm a recovering Catholic now. :)

Gotta love them Brits. Many view converstaion as "sport"; taken as an opportunity to demonstrate their command of the language. It is only natural that it spill over into something as inane as punctuation on a technical BBS. They just can't help themselves.
