The non-S Cayman

I was at a dealer tonight, and asked the sales guy about this. He laughed and said he didn't know, but smiled. I egged him on, and he said word is it will be about 8 months.

Truth or BS, hard to say.....

Entry level coupe, why not? I bet more than a few will sell - just more profit for Porsche.

According to my sources, there is a base Cayman (price slotted between Boxster and Boxster S) and a RS or CS-spec model (price unknown) on the way within the year.

RS or CS-spec ..............Cayman out performing the base 911, I guess the world is ready for a changing of the guard then.

They did it with the Cayenne - offering the V8 and V8 Turbo versions before the base V6, so why not with the Cayman?

I think it was kinda obvious by calling it the Cayman S. I mean really - we've got a Boxster/Boxster S, Carrera/Carrera S, and the Cayenne / Cayenne S - so getting a base Cayman in the fold is NOT a stretch.

Too bad about the price - go figure that Porsche would be able to manage to sell a coupe version of a car for more $$ than it's cabrio version.

Last Wednesday's Autocar had an article about upcoming Porsches. The Cayman (as opposed to the Cayman S) is supposed to arrive later this year, probably in time to compete with the fall release of the BMW Z4 coupe. They also said an RS version is pending, as well as - of all the stupid ideas - a targa version.

I saw a Z4 coupe on the road the other day. (I work next to BMW North America HQ). Still has too many angles and lines, but overall, it looks hot.

And if they go wild with an M-version Z4 coupe, it will give a 911 a run for its money.

Gotta love automotive competition...

23/03/2006 11:13 - Selon une indiscrétion de notre confrère britannique AUTOCAR, Porsche aurait développé une variante Targa de la Cayman, dotée d'un toit en verre coulissant vers l'arrière.

The roof line would be hard to pull off in a traditional targa. I'm thinking it could be one of those glass roof jobs - pretty cool if you ask me.

I am guessing that the RS or CS would have the base Cayman engine, with a lot of suspension and brake upgrades, and lighter hardware. Porsche would never let a Cayman outperform a 911 on paper --- they learned that lesson with the 944 Turbo.

Ummm pardon me for saying so, but wouldn't this JUST BE A BOXSTER?!? SmileWavy

No, kach is talking about the later style targa model, which is basically just a really extra-massive sun-roof. IMHO, that'd just about be worth ponying up the cash for, 'coz it's definitely the best of both worlds.

Z-man 03-29-2006 12:41 PM

I can't see how they'd be able to make a targa roof for that car (ie the extra big sunroof). Currently, there is not a sunroof option due to the roofline design.

Oh, and the 993 targas (the big sunroof ones) were actually 993 Cabrios with a modified top. The tell-tale sign of this is the rear windows - they follow the same outline as a cabrio with a hard-top on.

So maybe the Cayman Targa will be a modified Boxster?!?!?
