Dumb postal question, sending Priority envelope.

Never having done this, how does it work?

I have to send a 100 page package to a customer via a Priority Mail™ envelope. I have my own meter and have affixed the proper postage. I also printed a label directly from the USPS website. It weighs 15oz. My mailman has already come and gone for the day so I will bring it to the post office. Can I just drop it in the normal outdoor box like I would a letter or do I have to go inside and give it to them at the counter or put it in some special receptacle?

Thanks

I would go inside, gets to were it needs to be before the 'box' is emptied, and you get tto ask to make sure that you did everything right.

Some stores (like my local supermarket) have Customer Service counters which handle postal transactions; works well for me for doing off-hours mailing.

Well, I did it yesterday:) I tossed it in the box outside after going in and seeing a 15 person line at the counter (all of them looking like they'd been there a while). The only thing the box said was that it must weigh under 16oz, so away I went. It didn't say "No Priority Mail" or anything else. When I went inside there was an automated label and postage center that printed a label AND a postage strip for your package. Next to this "mail center" there was a parcel receptacle, but it said "only for packages with automated label AND postage. So since I printed my own postage strip a the office on my meter I was SOL.

When they process it, if their scale determines that its > 16oz, they'll return it to you and you'll have to take it in. This happened to me once, and when I took it in, the scale at the counter said < 16oz...

As well usually has to be in before 3 PM otherwise they will not guarantee delivery the next day. Also, their "guaranteed delivery" is not guaranteed.

FedEx guarantees it the next day, otherwise you are taking a chance...

And guess what? Their scales aren't inspected on a regular basis.
I discovered this years ago, when a letter was returned for being over an ounce. At the time, I had scales that were inspected and licensed by the state of Oregon on an annual basis, the last inspection weeks before this incident. I went back to the local post office, talked with the postmaster there. He couldn't recall the last time his scales were checked...

FWIW I spoke with my postman today and he said as long as it was under 16oz I was fine to toss it in the box.

Joe, Priority or Overnoight?

Joeaksa 03-29-2006 12:17 PM

Rick,

Forget which it was but it was the "guaranteed overnight" version. Well, its not as for sure as FedEx. I have one now that they guaranteed recently and am getting my money refunded as they did not get it there when they said it would arrive.

USPS is ok but if it really has to get there tomorrow, I use FedEx. Their ground service sucks but is really cheap. Wonder why? :)

Heh heh, kind of like "If we don't serve your food in 15 mins or less it's free"? I like that. I Fedex overnight as well....at least for personal stuff.

I do use their ground service as well because it's extremely convenient for me.

An aside:
USPS has some "Flat Rate" shipping boxes of various sizes.
Load them up to any weight and ship to anywhere in US for flat (cheap) rate.
I sent two Ducati brake rotors to Hawaii for $8.10 + $.90 for Delivery Confirmation.
Took four days to arrive.
Pretty good, eh?
.
ps I use FedEx ground all the time - good (and cheap) service...much better than USPS, IMO.

Speak of the devil! I sent a package to England on 12/23 via USPS, with all of the insurance bells and whistles. The recipient claimed it never got there, you know the story. Today I got the package back. There's a sticker on it claiming 3 delivery attempts, but I don't know what constitutes a delivery attempt in jolly old England.

Similar here, only mine was a returned Yamaha CDI to New Zealand, registered, return sig. request, Delivery Confirmation, etc., etc., etc. 'Been 6 weeks now...company says, "Not rec'd yet."
USPS says it could take up to 2 months to trace it and if not found then they'll let me fill out a form for the $138.
Then another huge gob of time for that to be processed.
.
Bought a set of OEM key blanks for my Jeep on eBay...sent w/a Del. Confim. Number.
Tracking says it arrived here in town but was not scanned at my door.
I never rec'd it. I called my local postmaster lady, get this...her first response, "Why don't you contact the selling company and ask for a free replacement. A lot of times they'll do that." Unreal!!!
The USPS is loaded w/dope-asses, I swear.
I worked for 9 yrs. for the Fed. Gov't, in avionics, I come from experience.
