Mac owners out of the closet: Show us what you got!

OK, I have to confess that even though Shuie is having problems with his Mac Mini, I can't seem to get enough of these great machines. I have a bunch of them running around the house, and a few more in boxes in the garage. Just can't get rid of them. Wonder what makes a Mac collectible? When my PC dies, I just chuck it in the garbage. Guess the little guys must have a personality.

Here's my current inventory:

PowerMac G5 w/ 23" Cinema display
iMac 17" (new style)
iMac (one of the old fruit-flavored models)
iBook 12"
Powerbook 15"
20th Anniversary Mac new in the box
Cube
Quadra 950 sitting in the garage
Soon to come: Mac Mini running my TV (Front Row) and stereo (iTunes) in the family room

Misc iPods
Dell with an Apple 22" Cinema Display!

I thought it was pretty much a given that Mac owners were already out of the closet...

I have noticed a high percentage of Apple users among Porsche drivers. Something about high performance and clean design...about minimalism and elegance.

I bought one of the very last 15" Powerbook G4's available - and now have two of these. They are brilliant tools.

I saw a recent interview with Bill Gates where he was asked what he would take if he could only take one thing to a desert island - and he replied with his Powerbook G4.

Got my eye on a video iPod now. Apple ROCKS

Macintosh computers have been my primary machines since their debut in 1984, bought my first one in September of that year and have had at least one ever since.

Current Mac: MDD G4 with dual 1.42ghz processors, two serial 160 gb drives and two DVD burners, 2gb RAM I've beefed up the cooling system on this machine, and installed quieter power supply fans in it so it doesn't sound like a Hoover running two feet away. I run a program called Temperature Monitor which gives me a read out from the built in temp sensor on this machine up in the menu bar.

Older unit: Digital Audio G4 with single 667mhz processor, in storage for now.

Other Macs, on loan to family members:
1. QuickSilver G4 with dual 1.0 ghz processors, two 80 gb drives, one DVD burner, 1.5 gb RAM.

2. Digital Audio G4 with single 500ghz processor, single 60gb drive, 768 gb RAM.

My office runs on four 17" G4 iMacs with a MacMini server (very fast!)

At home I have an Airport/Airport Express network linking two 17" G4 iMacs, a G4 tower, a G3 15" powerbook (Lombard) and a white G4 iBook.

Connected to my network is my iPod video, two digital cameras, a digital video recorder and an analog/digital converter.

I also own a lame-ass Dell that is only used to access an off-site secured network. I hate that machine. It wouldn't connect to my 802.11 network until I converted my password to a hexadecimal equivalent. WTF?!!

I'm still a novice compared to you guys--

Used a Color Mac Classic for my first CS class in uni...

Currently have a 1GHz G4 15" AlBook and a 2.0 GHz G5 iMac. Plus a gen2 20GB iPod.

Nothing fancy.

Office =
Airport
Dual G5 w/23" Cinema Display & iSight (Me)
2 x 17" G5 iMac & iSights (Them)
2 x 15" G4 PowerBooks & iSights (Them)

Home = Airport & 2 Airport Express cubes to get the signal through the brick to my patio in summer, MacMini, 20" Cinema Display & iSight (little computer/bigscreen is weird, I know)

Travel/Work at home = G4 Powerbook 12" & iSight

2 iPods & iPod shuffle

And, um.....2 Dell laptops (kid games on one, one ultralight X300 at work). They work, but are (as is Windows) inelegant.

The money machine:

1.5 GHz 17" PowerBook with 1.5GB RAM, 80GB HD and 26" external monitor for the bigger writing projects

The backup:

MacMini with 1GB RAM and cloned HD from the PB.

Tunes:

40GB Ipod with 24XX songs and dozens of podcasts

The game machine:

Dell 4550 2.54GHz P4 POS -- good only for PET, Battlefield 1942, Halo and poker. I keep it off the Internet to avoid the problems all my friends have with malware.

The one I can't throw out

Vintage G3 A/V tower with dual internal HDs, internal Zip drive, USB & SCSI connections for legacy drives.

I'm probably the only one here who saw a Mac in 1983 (at Microsoft) and went to the official unveiling in January '84 (religious experience). I held out for two full weeks after the presentation before buying a 128K Mac with dot matrix printer (Imagewriter).

Got a G4 here at work running Linux, have a G3 iMac w/ DVD at home, also running Linux. My PCs also run Linux...

Did you get a Thunderscan with that? Man, I loved watching that thing work. I think my original 128K with all the goodies cost something like $7,500

Yep, you have me beat. I was working at the UNC student store's computer sales department and did get to see the first 128k Mac on campus, and I bought the first 512k Fat Mac they received. We had a demo by GCC of their internal 10 mb hard drive when it came out, by the company no less trying to sell them. Price was $2500.00.

No foolin' I was working with Apple in '77 and kept trying to buy one -- mainly because my priority was having lower case letters -- and Jobs kept insisting that I'd be happier with an Apple II -- as soon as they built some. I had the fifth Apple II prototype made. Got pretty good money for it, but still wish I'd been able to grab the I.

I remember the ad in Byte Magazine, yeah I subscribed before Apple existed, for the Apple I, it didn't have a case as I recall, just a motherboard and some components. I think it may have had an optional keyboard, don't remember that much detail.
