Communication
After so many threads and so much rancor among some of us, I got to thinking: When we face one another and discuss something, we have the advantages of facial expression, body language, voice inflection as well as the words themselves. We also have the advantage of proximity which acts as a safety valve against saying something that could be misinterpreted as threatening. Telephones lose the visual clues and are therefore inferior to face-to-face. Here, on the internet, we have only the words; emoticons don't really do much. So, there is a lot of misunderstanding because words alone are inadequate.
Even in a face to face situation, we are limited to external communication; we cannot get "inside the head" of anyone else. So human communication is imperfect, and long distance makes it even moreso. We are all alone in our own heads. |
You should have come to the Ultimate Pelican Meet. Bitter enemies sat down and ate dinner together.

Maybe, maybe not. I think the next meet should be in Fairfax County.

Naw, I have seen this happen at other p-car meets. "Contestants' can, and usually will, sit and have a laugh and a beer.

Fairfax Co. has a HUGE Porsche community, we're right by the NRA range, lots of super ethnic restaurants, lots of gorgeous Asian women and the strip joints aren't far away in DC.

Perhaps because of the "fear of reprisal" factor? In other words, the other individual is close enough to clock you? And the uncertainty as to whether the other individual is "packing?" (reference to another thread or two concerning concealed weapons!!...."An armed society is a peaceful society")
The results at the meet are what one would expect; more "clues" as to the seriousness and "motives" of the other guy... |

Some people have very different personalities on the net versus en vivo.
|
I am not one of those. I'm just as crass and obnoxious in person as I am on the net. Tabs said so, himself.

Communication is 70% body language. I think many people on the board can say what they really think without the constraints of the usual 'social contract.' Many of my friends have different opinions, some passionate, about all the usual suspects, politics, religion, etc. Face to face it is difficult/uncomfortable to disagree with a friend.

I for one offer a beer (or other such refreshment) to Mul and the other conservatives here.

Fairfax? I'll be in DC in a few weeks visiting a friend and hitting the sites! Hopefully the weather is nice!

Fray, give some dates and maybe we can get a shoot together.
