squirrel!

In the wall right now. I can hear the little ba###rd as I type this... it's driving me CRAZY. I found where he got in too... and just set a trap, so I'll get him on his way out. Then I'll cover the little doorway he conveniently chewed. I won't cover the doorway first this time...learned that lesson last year.

I love old homes.

Be careful that it does not bite you if you get near. Rabies and all the other wonderful diseases they can carry...

Hugh R 04-06-2006 05:15 PM

Make sure you don't wound it. A vicious trapped animal might attack!

dhoward 04-06-2006 05:17 PM

One word.
Dumplings....

Por_sha911 04-06-2006 05:23 PM

It may be a KILLER BUNNY. Run away! Run away.

Jims5543 04-06-2006 05:35 PM

Killer Bunny?

Fireplace poker through the wall over and over until the sound stops.

Sure it's a sqirrel? I don't think sqirrels do that. I know rats do.

Christmas Vacation!!

notfarnow 04-06-2006 06:33 PM

rats?? eeek ! Better not even mention that possibility to wifey.

The little ba###rd, and perhaps his extended family, have apparently been at work in the basement/crawlspace, pulling away insulation and making a mess.

I'm using a humane live trap with some peanut butter. I want to catch the little ba###rd alive, so I can beat him to death with a piece of firewood. (kidding)

I had a mouse stuck between the studs of a wall once, and I could see him from a hole in the top plate of the wall. The little bugger fell in and was exhausted from trying to get out. So I toss down a little water and nuts and a line of rope so that he'd get nourished and hydrated and crawl up the rope and get out. Sure enough, in the morning he walked right into the trap at the top of the hole. On afterthought, I realized that I should have attached the trap to the rope and gone fishing. Whatever gets him out of the wall before he dies. Covered the hole with screen afterwards.

Years ago my room mate came knocking on my bedroom door in the middle of the night complaining about noises in his wall. I told him they were mice and to go back to bed. He said "no way; if they are mice, they must be moving in the furniture". So I went to listen. Too big for a mouse, so I went and grabbed my Single Six. There was an access hatch in his room to get to the shower plumbing in the adjoining bathroom, and it sounded like it was behind it. So I popped the hatch. We looked at each other and simultaneously exclaimed "it's a possum!". So I shot it in the top of the head, put the hatch back on, and went back to bed.

After catching @ 8 squirrels, getting my chewed up soffets replaced, getting the house sealed by a pro trapper, i still heard something running around up there. Well when i went up the check the traps a few days later, they were alll full of RATS.! He said they are THE most common rodent in peoples houses. I have sinced switched from the squirrel traps to big rat traps and have caught about 6 overall. Hopefully thats the end of them.

F.Y.I. my house is only @ 8 years old and is 3 stories tall from the ground. The most common way in, is up through the gutter downspouts, into the gutters, and they squeeze through the vents. It costs about $700-1000 to get your house sealed with a 1 year guarantee.

Jeff

Didn't it start stinking really bad after a week?

ed martin 04-06-2006 09:40 PM

I don't think squirrels make nests and tug at insulation in basements! That sure sounds like a rat. Living in the LA area I've sure had enough experinces with them. Long ago I used to live in the Wilshire area in a second floor apartment. I used to sleep with the window open in the summer. Next to my window was this avacodo tree. I could nearly reach out and grab a branch from my window. One night I awoke a noticed a slew of these things making their way along the branches. There must have been about ten to fifteen. That was the last time I slept with my window open. BTW, squirrels are the ones with the twitchy bushy tail, and you need to change this threads title to " Rats!".

Moneyguy1 04-06-2006 10:43 PM

Whatever it is, it must be an illegal.

BTW...If you have trouble with rodents eating through soffits, one of the only really permanent fixes I know of is aluminum over the wood. It has the additional advantage of never requiring paint!!!

I had that happen once. Someone advised moth balls. THe little stinker just kicked them back out the hole. Problem was, she had her litter and when I did get her out and sealed the ares with aluminum, she tried to get in the house by hanging on the overhang of the front door. Finally had to shoot her. They are tenacious.

rouxroux 04-07-2006 04:15 AM

And I thought this was a continuation of the "Why Momma's a democrat" thread....

notfarnow 04-07-2006 06:16 AM

No more talk about rats! It's a squirrel, OK??

Update: The trap is still empty. I'm hoping he'll go for a walk while the house is empty today.
