special needs kids/parents

Hi
I was just wondering if anyone else out here has a special needs child, and if so do you have any magic suggestions for things to do with your kids while they are on holidays? My son is now a teenager and I quickly run out of movies to see and the science center and am wondering if anyone else has any suggestions. Anything for my kid would have to be wheelchair accessible
thanks
Steve

Ok, to what degree? How about R/C planes? I love watching hawks and other birds fly and soar. If your kids have the motor skills, then R/C can allow them many freedoms and fun. Just offering an idea.

Dave

RC PLanes is a great idea depending on their level of functionality. I'm a member of a local club that flies out of the valley and we do have training and have had special needs students from time to time.

If they are good with their hands and have good hand eye coordination then they should be able to handle it. Can your son use a computer or game console to play video games? If so; he can likely handle RC cars or planes.

My stepson is nine and has severe CP among other issues. He is wheelchair bound and has little if any communication ability. But he loves music. We take him the the symphony or the pops or a jazz festival. He doesn't like to be outside much, so we try to go to things in the spring or fall when its tolerable outside.

Hey guys,

I volunteer teach adaptive skiing here at the Adaptive Sports Association in Durango, Colorado. Their web site is http://www.asadurango.org/

The winter program is essentially only skiing, and snowboarding for those that are able. Almost anyone can get in a bucket ski. I've taught autistic students who don't say a word, but have a huge grin on their face just being out there. Depending on your sons level of injury and strength of his arms he has the potential to be completely independant on a ski. There is a group in Torrey Pines California that comes out annually and they even have scholarships for the ski trip.

We have summer programs that include off-roading, white water rafting, wheel chair accessable hiking. All sorts of fun stuff for the summer oh fishing too. The options are limitless.

If there is any more information I can get for anyone feel free to contact me at any time.

Cheers
Rich

Thanks for all the suggestions! I should have given a little more info about my son (Bryce)
He is thirteen with severe Quadriplegic CP and non verbal. He has no control over any muscle group with the exception of his head and neck. He controls his speech computer with a single head switch. He is age appropriate smart and main streamed at school ( thank God for that) so when he is on holidays he gets board very quickly.
Rich76-911 I also volunteer at the local USARC here at Bear Mtn and Bryce has been skiing with me since he was three.

I just hate to have him sitting in front of the TV for long stretches of his holiday, so any and all suggestions are welcome!

Thanks again
Steve
