				Killer deer...moto...

Thought I'd post this after reading the fine comments on the "Questions for Motorcyclists" thread. Motorcycle safety advocate, trainer, and author of the "Stayin' Safe" series in Rider magazine, Larry Grodsky, 55, died Saturday, April 8, in Texas. He was killed while riding a recently purchased motorcycle back from California. His motorcycle collided with a deer. http://www.stayinsafe.com http://roadracingworld.com/news/article/?article=25446 . The one thing I fear most while motorcycle touring, especially on back roads, is colliding with a deer. I did kill a deer back in the mid '60's in Utah...flying down a steep canyon decline @ ~100+ mph in a Renault R10. (Haven't collided with one yet on a motorcycle) I hit the last one of a group that was crossing the Hwy. Didn't even try to miss it - going too fast...too dangerous to maneuver away. . Anyway, here's an excellent moto video showing how quickly it can happen - even being vigilant: http://www.break.com/movies/deervsmoto5.html

I dropped a bike once while trying to avoid a cow. Still have traces of the road rash on my right knee (no leather there) and the hamstring lets me know when it gets tired. At least I didn't hit the darn thing. All the way down, I had visions of taking the legs out from under 1800 pounds of beef and ending up very 'depressed'. Animals are not fun to share the road with. As the article illustrates, it can happen to anyone. Ride aware. Les

Broken collar bone, broken ankle, hairline fracture in my skull even with a helmet on. I'd tell more about it, but I didn't wake up 'til X-ray. Be careful out there. F*****g woodland rats.
