The "Next Big Thing" for TV?

New technology to force you to watch ads by disabling the controls.

The apparatus (270) and method comprises an advertisement controller (270) in a video playback device (150) that (1) prevents a viewer of a direct (non-recorded) broadcast from switching channels when an advertisement is displayed, and (2) prevents a viewer of a recorded program from fast forwarding the recorded program in order to skip past advertisements that were recorded with the program.

http://www.newscientisttech.com/article/dn9011-invention-the-tvadvert-enforcer.html

I suggest we pay off the national debt by finding the asshats that came up with this and charge $5 a whack to beat them senseless.

Think again:

and (2) prevents a viewer of a recorded program from fast forwarding the recorded program in order to skip past advertisements that were recorded with the program.

You have to buy the technology to be beholden to it. I'm envisioning a vast underground film industry springing up, disseminating their content via the nets using "unauthorized" technologies like BitTorrent etc.

Kinda like the indy music scene.

Why don't they make the ads worth watching instead....

Unfortunately--for the most part--the ads I see lately are better than the shows...

Tivo does not talk with the tags imbedded in the video and would allow you to fast forward through the commercials.

I did think again and believe its time for a margarita but this will work!

I love the new DVD's that make you watch the previews for other movies. That little crossout circle pops up in the corner whenever I hit skip. Makes me want to smash the TV.

Ah, but it's just a simple s/w "upgrade" to fix that...

That crossout circle is the viewer's cue to go take a leak, wash hands, make a sandwich, get a beer, then go back to the TV room and enjoy the movie.

In those cases I thought you could always press 'menu' then some text flashes up: 'press ok to go to disc menu' or something similar.

The key to preventing this would be to boycott the companies whose advertisements are forcibly shown. Unfortunately, though, we can't even get people to ignore their spam...
