New biz ideas?
I'm thinking its time to diversify. I have been in the construction business for too long. In an attempt to eventually phase out of commercial painting, we are looking to add a profit center along with continuing to run the existing business at a smaller scale to keep the money flowing.
Alternative energy is what we are interested in, but have no great leads on middle man type activities. We are thinking about the distribution side or product sales. Our strengths are confident salesmen, building is zoned for light manufacturing, 10,000 sf office/warehouse with dock, forklift, adaptability along with excellent customer satisfaction and retainage. Office staff of 7 - so plenty of folks to pitch in. Weaknesses are lack of a great million dollar idea and investment capital (which is why its time to move on and up). Without giving up your own million dollar ideas, any thoughts about up and coming niches?

What about deck construction/maintainance. I had some aquaintances that started a business after we got out of school. It was seasonal (this was in Michigan), but the pay was great. They could make $ with relatively unskilled workers doing deck cleaning and sealing. Made more money with design/construction. Focused 100% of their energy in high income areas.
How about installing high end garages? Again, focus on the areas with some $$$. Come in, do design, installed cabinets, raceway flooring, overhead racks. Bah. What the hell do I know......

Whole house permanent generators. These will be as common as central air conditioning units in 5 years. These are the type that are connected typically to your natural gas or propane supply and turn on/off automatically when the power blinks out.
