Went to the gun range yesterday
I took my 14 year-old son Dan to the pistol range yesterday, along with my best friend and his father-in-law. We fired my Beretta 92FS and my Sig P239, as well as a Glock 9mm and a Ruger .357 and a Browning HiPower .40 Here are two pics of Dan shooting the Ruger .357, he did really well and we had a great time!

I should probably mention that my son just completed his hunter safety and handgun course last fall and has gone deer hunting with his grandfather several times and we always emphasize gun safety. I had my hand on Dan's shoulder the whole time he was shooting and we shot in a very "controlled" environment, no "cowboy" tricks. He did very well with all of the pistols but he liked the Ruger .357 (pictured) and my new Sig P239 the most. I thought the Browning HiPower .40 was the smoothest, best balanced handgun I've ever fired. I may have to get one of those.
This trip to the range was a "reward" for my son helping me paint his great-grandfather's house to get it ready to sell. The two of us used 7 gallons of paint and it was alot of work, but Dan did a great job and this really made his day! |
Nice. Looks like Dan's getting some 1st class training early.
Ruger makes some nice stuff, definitely their revolvers are among the best, same with the semi - autos. I was so surprised at the P345, I immediately bought one as my carry...I chose this over a SIG, and a Glock. (I'm LH if that's a clue...) rjp |
Randy,
Thanks. I was a "Beretta guy" until I shot my Sig P239. I like the sights on my Beretta better than the "dot the i" sights on the Sig, but the Browning HiPower was absolutely the smoothest, best balanced pistol I've ever fired. Dan thought the Ruger was "cool" and he was very accurate with it, no flinching or fat fingering the trigger...fun day! |
Kids got guts. Hell, I'm a big sissy when it comes to firing a .357 :)

No felt recoil on a full frame revolver like this Ruger. The recoil isn't bad at all, as a matter of fact, the worst recoil I ever experienced was shooting a .45cal Derringer that kicked like a mule. Small frame, large caliber pistols really kick, the Ruger has a nice, solid frame, so the recoil isn't unpleasant at all.

I wonder what U'd think of a 44 mag....
Smith and Colt made GREAT revolvers in their day.... You should try a Python or a Smith 27.... Glad somebody likes the Revolvers instead of the plastic guns. |
I think at one time or another I've owned every version of the 92F / S and a few Cougars..
I only use Tupperware since it's light and it's in my glovebox. for shooting, I take my 1911's.. rjp |
Somewhere I have an old photo of me at the tender age of nine, firing my dad's .44 mag, an Inspector Callahan Special. Now it's my gun. With 180gr. rounds, it's a cannon.

It's like getting slapped in the face.
Once I fired a guy's Thompson Contender in .44 at the NRA. That was even worse than mine. |
Firing a buddy's S&W 44Mag, it went like this:
BOOOM! ouch BOOOM! ouc BOOOM! ouch BOOOM! ouch BOOOM! ouch BOOOM! ouch |
