Strange Internet Explorer Problem

If I type in Ebay.com, my browser will do nothing. If I bring up the search page, and type in Ebay, I can click the link and no problem.

I have this problem with many webpages. I have run virus scan and it isn't finding anything.

Any idea?

When did this start? Microsoft recently released a security update that has been breaking things. Search for a file called verclsid.exe, it resides in C:\windows\system32. If found rename it to somthing like verclsid.old. See if IE works.

BTW, I believe it only applies to XP.

What OS are you running? What if you type in www.ebay.com?

What if you bring up a command prompt and type 'ping ebay.com'?

ok, are you typing "ebay", "ebay.com", or "www.ebay.com"?

skip the first one and use one of the second two.

Slodave,

Things worked great, after I changed that file, and I did get a security update from Microsoft, just before the problem started.

Thanks

Good timing on that question 1973911s, I was just about to ask the same thing. Dave's trick of renaming the file worked great--thanks Dave. Mine also started to act the same way after the last Window's update. Thanks again guys. Tcar both my computers are Gateway's (old tower and new notebook) and it messed them both up.

You're welcome.

Gotta love Micro$oft. The rigorous QA testing they do. Oh well, back to my stable Linux project.

BTW

Here is what the file is supposed to do:

"This security update introduces a new file, Verclsid.exe. Verclsid.exe is used to verify a COM object before it is instantiated by Windows Explorer."

MS attempt to protect people from bad ActiveX programs.
