Mustang shopping on EBay...

Looking for a good used Mustang. Everything available locally seems way overpriced, or is just plain CRAP.

Found a beautiful Mustang on EBay, but the ad claims the car was totaled due to "minor" water damage from hurricane Katrina.

What do you think? Why would an insurance company total out a car with minor damage? Anyway, here's part of the description;

This fantastic Mustang GT was in Lake Charles, Louisiana during the Katrina hurricane. It spent two weeks in a multi-level parking garage, and the only water damage was to the trunk area and lower exhaust system. Geographically, Lake Charles is nowhere near ANY salt water, and the only water damage, though minor, was FRESH water near the trunk area. State Farm paid the vehicle off as a total loss, even though the damage was minor. This vehicle has been inspected by the insurance company, auction company, 3 mechanics, and myself, and I can honestly say that the Mustang is in correct operating condition. The original owner of this fantastic automobile is a Louisiana police officer, and he is very upset that he was not able to re-purchase the vehicle from the Insurance company.

So the gist of the sellers story is State Farm totalled the car because the trunk carpet needed replacing?

hmmmm.....

Is $12k really all that cheap?

A vehicle with a salvage title will always be worth less, so what you save will be offset to some extent by the reduced resale value and saleability. Financing and insurance can be hard to get, and you never know until later what damage really took place. It's a bad idea.

What year mustang are you looking for?

A co-worker is selling his. It is super clean, low milage and really nicely set up. It was my old car, he bought from me and it has been well taken care of. If has always had synthetic oil in it. Its a real head turner.

I can e-mail you pics if you would like.

Here is his online add, his bottom line is more in the 12,500 range. He needs to sell this fast. He needs the money to pay off some loans to people.

Moses, thanks to a hurricane in the Florida keys, a friend of mine had a 1998 C2S with aero kit totaled....with VERY low miles. It was beautiful to look at...even after sitting in salt water for a few hours. It's electrics, brakes, and more!, are totally shot. It would cost more than the $60,000 plus he got from insurance to fix the car. Get the (hurricane) drift???

Umm I do not have much experience with buyign cars off the internet...well none. Lake Charles though was not hit by Katrina, that was Rita's path. Just thought I would tell you that.

pwd I wasn't referring to your friends car but the one that Moses was looking at. Sorry about the confusion. I am not definite but I believe that Katrina passed right through the keys. It was only a cat 2-3 though.

I'd check the Mustang forums. I've seen better deals there than on ebay.

That's right, Wilma...my friend wisely took his motor home when he fled, taking living quarters for he & his dog. Alas, when he returned, his Porsche & his V-10 powered "hot Dodge pickemup"
had both been parked in a few feet of salt water. Both totaled.
I offer this up as a reason to avoid hurricane damaged cars.
