Show me your: Gas prices and Octane

bout time for another of these discussions.

Why do different states provide different octane fuels?

in Pennsy we have 87 89 93 at most stations.

93 octane is $3.00 now. ( and i use to complain about paying $1.23 for premium)

What octanes fuel do you have in your state.

In Ontario, we only have 87 89 91 octane levels. Only one gas station, Sunoco offer 94 octane.

The price of gas in Canada is ridiculous. In good times, it is around $3/gallon (68-70 cents/L) but now it $4.80/gallon (~110 cents/L).

Not only do the oil companies make a killling off us, the government has a set gas tax/L then on top of that charges an additional 7% tax (also charges tax on the tax, which is disgusting). So you can understand why Civics, Corollas and Cobalts (and Echos, Fits and Aveos) do extremely well in Canada.

EDIT: BTW, the gas prices are FOR 87 OCTANE ONLY. Add 5-10 cents/L for 89 and another 5-10 cents/L for 91. I have no clue what 94 octane costs.

3.45 last night, in the Palisades, for 91 octane environmentalist piss gas...The government doesn't seem to care enough to suspend gas taxes or ridiculous formulations, to lighten the burden on the taxpayer.

There are generally a couple of reasons that fuels vary from state to state. There are differences that have to do with the EPA or other idiot government agencies, as they try to tell the fuel companies what to put in gasoline to minimize pollution. Often, they get it wrong, after studying the effects of their meddling for a while. Some areas have pollution problems that are seasonal and so the gas changes at certain times of the year. In Tulsa, we have ozone problems in the summer time and these episodes threaten to get us on the EPA's "dirty air" list, which is not a good thing.

There are political factors at work too, as some states think adding alcohol to gasoline is a good idea. It benefits the farmers, therefore the rest of us must suffer. This makes sense to some jackass, somewhere. Obviously, not a car guy.

Then you have the perceived market demands. The last time gas got expensive, the marketing weenies decided that, in Tulsa, 93 octane was way too expensive for us and 91 was all we needed. Note that this decision was made ahead of the actual buying trend. Once one player gave up on 93, the rest followed and the wholesale demand for the product fell and now it is unavailable to us. It's a shame, as we have several refineries here and pipelines out the wazoo. I tried to talk the biggest vendor into reconsidering this assinine move but I was unsuccessful.

Lastly, there are different prices based upon location. Part of this has to do with competition, or taxes, but another part has to do with the fact that in the more affluent areas of town, they tend to stick it to you at the pump. Hey, they get away with it.

At least we have (relatively) cheap gas. 91 octane varies from $2.59 to $2.85 today, depending upon where you go to get it.

I paid $1.22.9 per litre yesterday for Sunoco 94. For you US guys, that's $5.60 CAN per Imperial gallon, or CAN $4.64 per US gal, or about US $4.03 per US gallon.
