USPS Incompetant?

Im currently waiting for a parcel from pelican parts that on the pelican tracking says it was shipped out monday dinner time. This is on a 3 - 5 day service to the UK so by now it should be well on its way. However when I try to track it USPS say they have no record. Ive just got off the phone to pelican customer service who say the USPS local office has just hung onto it for over 48hrs now without doing anything with it or even scanning it into there system. Am I being fed a load of BS here or are USPS really that incompetant?

Funny, I was just bittching about USPS today. Their tracking system is a joke. My package from an ebayer arrived today and I checked last night - after about 5 days- and still no entry except the initial drop off date.

UPS's tracking is good but Fedex's is better.

1972_911T 04-26-2006 03:47 PM

Its odd cos my last pelican order sent by USPS the tracking was on straight away and the parcel was here in 3 days I thought that was briliant then this happens.

Government entity, nuff said.....

teenerted1 04-26-2006 03:59 PM

you usually have to pay extra for USPS to track a package. OK for delivery confirmation but never have relied for letting me know where my package is. not sure how well they are on international:confused:

I've had stuff shipped by USPS where they did take 2 or 3 days to get around to getting it out of the post office where it was dropped off.

cool_chick 04-26-2006 04:24 PM

That's weird....

I ordered something online, the item wasn't in stock. Yesterday, I emailed the vendor, and they told me it was shipped, April 18, and USPS says it was "delivered" to "Chicago" on the 20th. I still don't have it. My firm's mailroom has been trying to find it for 2 days now.....

Personally, I"m kinda pissed for other reasons as well....because for the shipping cost I paid, it should've gone another method than priority mail, but that's another issue.....

sammyg2 04-26-2006 04:58 PM

Duh....... a government run organization that has no accountabilty, and NO DRUG TESTS!

I personally know of one postal employee that is so drugged out i wouldn't let him on my porch without calling the cops.

I went to the post office last night to pick up a certified letter. I got there right after work, at about 4:00. When I got to the back of the line, all 8 booths were open. By the time I reached the front of the line 4 of the postal employees had gone on their lunch break. Seems that they don't take their lunches in the middle of the day when no one is there...no, they save them for peak hours.

USPS is a Democrat union, of course it is incompetent.

Don Ro 04-26-2006 06:19 PM

USPS incompetent?...hmm, let me think.
.
1) Last Sept. I received my VISA statement, the envelope had been opened and taped shut, my address circled in red and "Wrong address" written in red. Dumbasses delivered to wrong house.
I called PO office, spoke w/"Postmaster" who barely spoke English. She said they were training new folks.

2) In Nov., same thing happened but w/MasterCard statement...Dumbasses delivered to wrong house.
I called same "Postmaster"...same story. She apologized.

3) This Jan. I bought a set of OEM keys for a vehicle from an eBay company...seller emailed me a Del. Confirm. #.
USPS site said it was rec'd by seller's PO...date/time, etc. Two weeks later, no keys.
I check USPS site, it said package was rec'd by my PO on a certain date, and no other info.
I called "Postmaster" again. She said, "It looks like we did receive it here, but it was not deliver-scanned."
Then she said - Get This!, "Why don't you contact the seller and have them send you another set free. Sometimes they'll do that. I think your keys are sitting on someone's coffee table."

4) This Feb., I bought a $162 Yamaha CDI unit from an eBay company in New Zealand...wrong unit. Sent back for refund.
All manner of insurance and sig. required, del. confirm., etc.
It's now lost in the system somewhere between SF and LA.
Had to fill out forms to find it...no word yet.

5) Last week, rec'd my American Exp. card statement. You guessed it...opened and taped shut.

I worked for the gov't for 9 yrs. It's a slacker haven.

Yes, more drug tests needed. They'll catch the dude who smokes reefer at night; surely, he cannot be trusted with the credit card offers from Chase.

Ya think?

The truth can drive you crazy...Intelligence isn't all its cracked up to be.

coloradoporsche 04-26-2006 07:30 PM

Not just government-run, but a government-enforced, tax-free monopoly. It is actually illegal for a private company to deliver regular mail so there is no real competition. If it weren't for Fed-Ex and UPS innovations they'd have no tracking system at all.

I live in a new subdivision where all the mailboxes are in one central box for each block. Makes it really easy for the post office. Yet, my mailman (ok "mail carrier") cant get the little pieces of paper into the right boxes more than, say, 85% of the time. The whole neighborhood knows things about my family that they shouldn't because the mail gets sent all over hell.

Nathans_Dad 04-26-2006 09:41 PM

You think mailing stuff with them is bad, try getting a money order cashed that they wrote!!

1972_911T 04-27-2006 01:09 AM

Well the parcel has finnaly been accepted into there system, it only took them 52 hrs to decide to do something with it. now thats service for you!

RickM 04-27-2006 08:16 AM

I have no problem with USPS...except for Parcel Post. It is the worst service out there!

artplumber 04-27-2006 08:35 AM

Is the topic an honest question?

They routinely lose mail they are supposed to be following like registered, certified etc, never mind stuff w/just postage on it. UPS is a little better ground, moderately better air. DHL ok about the same as UPS. Fedex best (at least by air).

legion 04-27-2006 08:56 AM

FedEx for air will get your package there on-time...for a price.

FedEx ground will punt your "signature required" package at your front door from their moving truck.

Or if THEY lose your money order, you need to PAY THEM A FEE to submit the form that reports it lost!!!

1972_911T 04-29-2006 11:24 PM

Cheap the service may be but they still advertise it as a 3 to 5 day service to the UK. When they hang onto it for 2 days without doing anything with it and then they only scan the parcel in after a member of your staff called them to find out what was happening it makes it unlikely to meet that target.

That said the last time I orderd from pelican the parcel was shipped by USPS on a thursday and I had the parcel tuesday AM, tracking was available as soon as the order was stated as shipped in the pelican tracking system.

Yep- to be fair USPS delivery times for any service below guaranteed express mail are 'averages', not guaranteed dates of delivery. Sometimes they may be quicker than the 3-5 day average, sometimes slower.

If you want guaranteed, you need to pay the $$$

Wayne,
No doubt there is a potentially mitigating circumstance, but the USPS is not the most dependable service. They routinely lose standard mail (first class or parcel post) for months, or damage goods in transit. They've even misplaced registered mail! My last experience occuring in the last 2 months. Are the others perfect? No, but gradations better depending on the service/cost - just like most things in life. If you can stand to lose it, ship it USPS. If you'd rather it get there, UPS/DHL. If it really has to be there, FedEx (at least for now).

In addition, the USPS option you chose to ship is the cheapest option with the fewest tracking features. If you want, we can ship out via UPS and FedEx, which are faster, but are usually about 1.5 times more expensive.

I agree. I have ordered several times by USPS and it has worked quite well.
The tracking, however, sucks big time. It doesn't seem to update very often. Several times I have already gotten the package before the tracking system even has registered the package number :)

The thing is, you almost have to offer USPS to keep the actual cost of goods to the customer down. Most people, if they are shopping for something, look at what it costs them for delivery and factor that in.
Overall, the USPS is actually pretty good, though when something gets "lost" it can be really aggravating. Especially if it's a couple of boxes of things going to Italy:-) Aside from the two boxes, though, I'll bet I end up with 1:1000 that doesn't get delivered, maybe less, and 1:250 that has some kind of problem, mostly being really late. Whatever they say for international delivery I always add two days to it.
If Wayne's system works like mine, the delivery confirmation number is created by me, and I don't think I've ever seen a message that it got into their system until it was delivered. Except for media mail/parcel post, then delivery confirm does work as a tracking number. You can use it for first class, too, they say that the envelope/box needs to be 3/4" or thicker. I use it all the time on thinner envelopes than that, and it works.
On the whole, I'm really happy with them.

msk1986911 05-01-2006 07:10 PM

Wayne is correct in that USPS does offer a pretty low bufget service that is, for the most part, reliable. As far as I know, I've never not received a letter or package as a result of an error on the part of USPS. Regarding their tracking system, USPS's current tracking system does not provide real-time tracking like the other couriers, although I'd expect that sometime in the future. Consdering the volume of mail that they process, the huge customer base that they serve and the fact that (unfortunately) they are a quasi-government organization, they do a pretty effective job.
NOTE: I AM NOT A USPS EMPLOYEE
