72 911 vs. 72 240Z
So which was the better car back in 72 or today as a classic:
- For racing? - Cost to own? - Comfort and driveability for everyday driving? - Parts availability? - Soul? Prompeted by the History Channel's show Automobiles - 240Z. They claimed it was a Porsche beater at the time - is it still? Wiritten as a the owner and lover of a 72 911 so please go easy!

240s are great cars.
I know some one here in Seattle who has an entire 240z racing rig available for $15000. Truck, trailer, car.....extra parts. PM if you want the guys #.

The 240Z was a great car in it's day...BUT...fit & finish nowhere near the quality of a 911. Performance, if stock? About the equal of a 2.2 911T...I think a 2.4 T would be faster than a 240Z....and I
know that the 240Z wouldn't touch a 2.4 911E or 911S... All that said, a nice 240Z would look great in anybody's garage. They were indeed a breakthrough car for the Japanese.

maybe the uninitiated to the 911's "traits" found they were quicker in the traditional layout of the 240...
i love both cars. still want a nice 240 someday |

I had a '72 240Z and it was a blast to autocross it, but my newer "stock" '79 SC definately would eat my old "stock" 240Z. That said, I think it would be cheaper to build a monster killer 240Z than it would be to do the same with a 911.

911 based racing cars have won a few more races than the 240Z.

To me, the 240 lacks the soul of the 911 - and I don't think I can define that.
But it also lacks (with no apparent side effects) a leaky dry sump Many possible oil leaks Cheap to repair No troublesome fuel inection systems Not particularly prone to rust So why do they cost so much less - they were even half the price in 72!

Mine was definitely prone to rust!
In the end, it is a Datsun, not a Porsche. (I still want mine back though!)

This thread is useless without pics. Here's one of my '72.
It's stripped and just has a driver's seat so the height is a bit high ![]() ![]()

How many '72 240's are there around these days? Sure seems to be more 911's but they both rust and so sad to see one go down this way.
My first 911 was a '72 model and I hope I get the chance to own another one someday...

Joe,
There are plenty of early z's around especially in AZ. You have to remember that being cheaper than porsches for most of their lives lets them end up in homes that are less likely to take care of them. They still are a ton of fun to drive, and talk about easy to work on/mod!
