I would take exception to that statement. Their paperwork may have permitted them to visit, but not to stay.
Let me put it another way. Let's say I asked to borrow your car. If I kept it for as long as I said I would and brought it back in good condition; no harm done. However! If I drove away and never contacted you again, that is theft. People who enter the country by overstaying the conditions on their visas, knowing they were going to stay have committed fraud. Drag their sorry asses into court. (According to the article, a goodly number are snowbirds!) Have fun. Les

I guess my point is that concentrating solely on border security only solves half the problem.

Almost agreed. The border problem is much bigger IMHO, and one could make the argument that the folks w/visas have at least passed through some identification/search process (making it easier when they crash a plane into the White House to put a picture of them on the news and say "X, who entered the US legally..." - just kidding).
Relatively speaking, it's much easier to control number of visas issued to citizens of a particular country than open space.

What is the ****** point of this thread? If you are illegal, your illegal. If you don't have a valid visa to be here, you are illegal.
What difference does it make if you walked through the desert to get here or came on the Queen Mary? YOUR ILLEGAL. duh.

I've heard the second largest US illegal immigrant population is the Irish. My reddish-bearded face says they should go too.
True enough the southwest was only relatively recently (cough) "annexed", that US big buisness' and even the IRS are conspirators in the process of destroying the middle class, and that the legalization process is very flawed for good hard-working guest workers. But now it's broken. In a modern "post-industrial" society with dwindling natural resources, the immigrants the US should be attracting are highly skilled technitians with low reproduction rates. The lake that was Mexico City has dried up, and there is only going to take a few years of massive drought(such as in the 1930's) for the problem to get out of hand very, very quickly. Even the Colorado river is now diverted to maximun capacity. Large swings in population migration combined with ecological disasters are the key ingredients of social destabilization. This has been repeated throughout history. I'll predict in the next 50 years, tops, there will be a big push to start draining the Great Lakes. Since Canada has a lot of oil and resources and is considering building a pipeling to the west to supply China, they might not remain the complacent northern neighbor. I wish I had the free health care of the "guests". Bye-bye Medicaid and S.S. Before I was 16, I worked in distributing warehouse, bagged groceries, delivered papers, and flipped burgers. Those jobs are gone. Here in Michigan the only "natives" are the Chippewa and the Huron- not Aztecas(patial decendents of wayward Apaches I've heard)- and the tribes are still getting screwed. Melt, or get filtered.

Does that mean that George Bush III will announce Canada has weapons of mass destruction, (watch out for the poutine) and invade our frozen assets? Les

I thought all we had to do to get Canada to capitulate was to claim we are an oppressed minority whose rights are being oppressed?
Certainly, all of us Americans have a right to free Canadian healthcare.

That $9 trillion+ deficit Bush has accumulated could create a new generation of many doctors... And interconnect all the major cities with maglev trains.
Who gave that monkey a credit card? (amoung other things)I think the US has made a long-term stategic mistake by sending overseas jobs to China instead of central/south America. Not only did it create the present immigration situation, but it lost us a lot of credibility and buisness ties. |

You're certainly at war on open government, free speech, free press, scientific findings, education, etc...
Yeah, mission acomplished. Opium production is back up in "that one" country, warlords in place, and someone was too much of a sissy to get their feet wet deep in Pashtun country. Oh yeah, the Shiite mullahs are in full swing in Irans former first nuclear target. How's that "war on drugs" thing going anyways? Was Ollie able to take all of Columbias coke away from them and safely "dispose" of it? <--cheap shot back atya Opps my bad. The topic was relating population shifts and economics but we've gotten onto a tagent. Last edited by john70t; 05-02-2006 at 05:50 PM.. |
