I burned a home-made video on a CD-RW disc that has a .wmv extension and is an Audio/Video file. The CD loads great on the computer, but on another device such as a DVD player, it won't load. Why? How can I change the disc so it will load on another device?
I have an English presetation tomorrow and I need the disc to play on the DVD player. If not, I can always hook the camcorder up to the TV and play it from there, but I would rather just play the disc.

CD-RW are not readable on most older standalone DVD players. Try burning to a CD-R.

The dvd player might not support the .wmv extension either.

You'll need to play it from your camcorder. I don't think any DVD players play .wmv files. Your computer recognizes the file type and plays it through Windows Media Player.

You would need to burn it to a DVD-R or DVD-RW. That's why they call it a DVD player not a CD player. They are two different technologies. Some DVD players will play special CDs. The real difference is that it's more about the format of the file than it is about the media. PC's will play lots of file types, but generally you may have to download different programs or codecs to play them all. A DVD player is much more limited. They will generally just play DVD's burned in the standard DVD format. A select few will play SVCDs which are CD's with SVCD format videos. Most won't.
In summary, the odds of you figuring it out, getting the right program to convert to the correct format and then getting it burned to the right kind of media is slim to none, especially if your presentation is today. Good luck.

My Philips DVP642 plays movie files on CD-RW. The problem is the encoding. You need to convert your movie into mpeg 2, I think.

Thanks for the advice. I went to the video department at our school to see if I could get a cord to hook up the camcorder to the TV, but they didn't have any. Luckily, my teacher had a projector setup that would allow projection from his computer, so it all worked out ok. Thanks slodave, mschuep, Steve, masraum, and Niel for the future reference.
