How to fix a broken bannister?
 

After 18 years, the kids have finally manged to break the bannister loose from the wall. They're gonna tear the whole thing down if I don't get it fixed soon.

My first idea is drawn at the bottom of these photos, BUT I really don't want to have to fill-in, sand, and repaint after drilling, 'cause I know it will never look the same.

Helpful, alternative soultions are welcome.

I think your plan is the only solution that will secure it enough. Feather the paint and you'll be fine. It could look the same...it's so close to the wall that no one would notice.

after looking again, a 4" drywall screw from underneath would hold for a bit....my wife said you'd be better off if you just moved ;)
