A little tax help please

If any of youse guys can help I'd appreciate it.

I filed my state taxes on time and was due a refund. Today I get a notice of underpayment from the state for the full tax bill. Thats right, they're saying I didn't pay any state tax at all last year. Well I have a copy of the W2 that obviously shows I paid..but what do I do? They want me to pay my taxes again!

help?

Check your state tax return to make sure your withholdings were indicated, then call the state. They should be able to help you sort it out.

thanks Steve, the W2 shows my total state tax as it should. Guess I'm wondering if they'll make me pay again just to satisfy the citation they issued then make me wait for a refund.

I don't know how it works for the state, but for Federal, if you respond to their inquiry, you asked for a 6 week extension to get stuff sorted out, because they know it takes forever. Probbaly similar for your state.

Sounds like you screwed up your return, or left out a copy of the W-2.

I'm wondering if you indicated the correct withholdings on the return itself...
