There are occasionally driver quality 356s posted for sale for $12-15k... and those will only go up in value.

Get a VW Bug in decent shape, year/body style is up to you. I would probably go mid 70s for me just for the updated mechanicals.

Anyhow, buy the thing for $3-6k depending on condition. Do a complete overhaul, fix all rust, etc. Basically update it to more modern standards. Here would be the short list:

Rebuild engine or replace with newer engine (is that even possible?)
Complete Bodywork and paint
Update suspension as much as possible for a smoother ride.
New sound deadening, install A/C, power windows, etc.
Redo interior/sound system, etc.

Total budget would be something around $12-15k (about the price you could get a new Civic or similar econobox for).

Is it feasible? Worthwhile?

The goal would be a solid reliable daily driver with good fuel economy and a lot more character than the cars of today.

Thoughts?

I may have the car for you, PM me if you become serious.

I agree with the idea of buying a '67 or earlier car. One of my all time favorite cars was a '65 VW I had. It was stolen in '90 out of my driveway. It had been painted (sort of a pea green), new interior, wheels and I had a nice 1776 to go into it. It was a sunroof car & I just loved getting into it in the morning, cranking the sunroof open, and driving to work. After it was stolen was when I bought my first Porsche. I'd still buy one like it in a second.

Here's a couple of projects I have waiting in the wings: a '56 sunroof bug and a '56 hardtop. The hardtop was originally a parts car, but it's actually pretty straight and dry. Unfortunately the dope fiend that owned it before me sold off the good bits - including the aprons - to score some drugs.

Some day I'll get the '61 double cab prettied up as well, but at least it's a running bus.

glad I looked at the pic. For a minute I thought you started dating older women...or older couples even. Hey, to each their own...

I hope for a resumption someday of JW's "Bugster" project. A ragtop beetle with a mid-mounted flat six. That's right. The engine would be right next to the driver's right ear. Done right, there is no question this would be featured in a magazine.

Ged, your yard looks "more full" of stuff than mine does, and that's not easily done.

Wow that silver Ghia is beautiful. I kicked around the idea of a Ghia about 6 months ago but I figured I wouldn't fit well. Course, I fit ok in a bug so why not a Ghia? And I could always take the easy way out and buy a convertible...lots of head room in those.

I like this idea a lot. My next purchase may well be a Ghia!!
