Coke & Mentos

Anyone done this? Can't believe I never heard of this one. . .

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-1450915772177922792

Warning: Possibly the most annoying music ever recorded, but the video is great.

Stoppin' at 7-11 on the way home. . .

Acox914 05-17-2006 03:16 PM

seen it done....

its a messy party trick.
lets see your results :)

better living through chemistry:

Used to do this with sodium way back when...5 gallon buckets filled with water and an underwater release system. boom, like that.

M.D. Holloway 05-17-2006 03:56 PM

Cool stuff – this is the sort of thing that gets kids interested in chemistry yet adds to the deviancy as well. You should see what Mercury will do to Aluminum – pretty much dissolves it.

Don Plumley 05-17-2006 05:25 PM

It's on my list to do with the kids this summer when we are at the lake...

Pour brake fluid, or even real Coke on to chlorine pool shock and get away. Warning, it will RUIN your lungs and the paint of your car if its anywhere nearby, or your house paint.

I've been more impressed with dry ice and water in a sealed container (water bottle) than the mentos and coke.

Apparently theres also somthing cool you can do with aluminum foil and bleach? I've never tried this one though so I'm not sure if the ingredents are right.

Acox914 05-17-2006 07:18 PM

hahah....

almost got arrested for "dry ice deviancy" back in high school......

mailbox was harmed.....

Some kid was arrested over the weekend for putting one of these in a shopping center parking lot:eek:

The cops also spoke to us because of the dry ice. It didn't occur to any of the three people in the group (myself included) to put the device in a mailbox, untill the cop mentioned it.

Then there's Thermite, high temperature fun.

arcsine 05-17-2006 08:41 PM

Don't forget the ever popular liquid oxygen and BBQ mix.
Those kooky scientists.

How about a .50 caliber lawn mower kill.

masraum 05-18-2006 08:57 AM

I have heard that equal parts of gasoline and matches will produces an interesting effect.

mschuep 05-18-2006 10:03 AM

oh yeah, I think the music makes the one masraum posted better than it really is. I wish I still had a potato gun

I don't know about bleach (sodium hypochlorite) however in the presence of water, lye (sodium hydroxide) and potassium hydroxide both react well with aluminum oxide and cause an exothermic reaction as hydrogen gas is released.

I'll not detail it here on this site, but google a bit and you'll find it.

red-beard 05-18-2006 01:11 PM

It a wonder any of us lived this long....

cashflyer 05-18-2006 01:14 PM

There is also an interesting thing you can do with ammonia and iodine.

(Actually, please don't do it. This one is not at all safe, and does not result in a simple overpressure situation. It is HE, and will take off a limb or two.)

Jared at Pelican Parts 05-18-2006 02:22 PM

liquid plumber and aluminum foil in a an empty 2L bottle will produce hydrogen. tape a match to the outside, light it and run
