Do you have any plans for your 200th birthday?

I've been following research into longevity for a few years and have come to the conclusion that our generation will most likely live well in to our 100's. Here is an article from today's MSNBC front page discussing the ramifications...

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12916099/

The impact on individuals has already started to show...in the past, people accumulated a pile of $$ during their working years in order to live off the cash when they retired. But that model is no longer valid. People can now easily out live their nest eggs. So a pile of cash is no longer sufficient. You need to have a collection of income-producing assets that can sustain you indefinitely (or plan to work indefinitely). I often wonder if most retirement planners are explaining this to their clients. I know it has certainly shaped my retirement plans.

So I'm curious. Has anyone else pondered this and/or altered their plans to accomodate long life?

Well, DUH! As I have posted here often enough to bore everyone to death...paying interest is financial misery. Setting things up so others pay interest to you is financial joy. Live to be 100? Gawd...I hope not!

lol..janus..i don't expect we'll see such a significant increase in the number of years people in this country will be living in our generation. when i was younger, i used to think this was possible..i just don't find enough evidence to support the idea that we're going to have a huge populace of folks in their hundreds in this generation. we still have cancer and heart disease..and probably the worst eating/exercise habits on the planet in this country. sure, we've got medicine..but there's no 'life-giving pill'. we'll live a little longer on average than our parents' generation, but i'm making no plans to celebrate b-day number 100. if you're around at 100 though, please place some flowers on my grave..

I for one, do not plan on retiring. There are a number of reasons:

1. Yes, you might outlive your money.

2. "Retirement" is a relatively new concept anyway. Before the 20th century, people basically worked until the couldn't.

3. I really believe that "If you rest, you rust." Case in point: My own grandfather started working when he was 12. He worked manual labor his entire life until he was 84. Then he "retired" and shortly thereafter his health began to go downhill.

Now I am not saying that I will be working 9-5 forever, but some type of part time job or volunteer may not be such a bad thing.

The important thing about longevity is to LIVE WELL and be healthy. Unfortunately, we live in a moresly fat society and I fear for my fellow Americans. They may live long, but will most likely not live well.
