Got bored

Got bored last night.

Decided to do a Linux install.

Downloaded the Fedora DVD iso (3 gig). Used torrent and it came down in an hour over my FIOS broadband.

Configured a new Virtual Machine in Parralels, pointed the CD to the iso, boot and 20 minutes later Fedora is up and running.

Not bad basically an hour and a half from start to finsih.

Parralels VM rocks.

Here's a screenshot where I'm runing OSX, XP and Fedora all at the same time. All three simultaneously accessing the net via built in Airport.

XP and Fedora can run windowed or full screen if I want. Switching between all 3 is as simple as switching between an application.

No repartitioning required. Makes adding SW safe. Clone the disc image before making any changes to the OS and if things go bad just toss the image and use the last known good one.

I know nothing of Comp Sci - so explain it to me like I am a 10 year old - when it comes to that stuff I am? What did it buy you?

For XP it saved my back.

I have a corporate issued Dell laptop that I really only use for email and the corporate intranet.

I bring my personal 17 inch Mac to work for my daily tasks.

There is a Mac VPN client for our firewall but the IT guys insist that they need to install it but they admit they do not know Macs and although it is an install that my 6 year old can do I refuse to let them touch my Mac.

So by running XP in a Winow on my Mac I have full access to everything, don't need to let IT touch my Mac and best of all I can carry one computer that does the same job as both.

I have some side projects were I manage a couple of dedicated linux servers for a gaming company and an ecommerce company. I plan on replicating the servers locally so I can test upgrades and develop scripts before putting them on a live production server.

I can also test the servers/scripts for compatability under different platforms without having to move from one computer to another.

I have an even more naive question. How exactly do you do one of those "screen shots"?

In XP hit the Print Screen button. That place a copy of the image in the Clipboard, (memory). Open Paint or some other image app and hit Paste.

In OSX you hit Command+Shift+3 (all 3 at once)to capture the entire screen to a file named Picture.png which saves to your desktop. Hit command+shift+4 to get a cursor that allows you to select just the portion of the screen that you want and saves to your desktop.

Linus was Lucy's little brother that Sally had a crush on.

Mac is machine gun made somewhere down south IIRC.

Screen shot is how you break into the porn industry.

Any other questions?

Was 9 pm and dark out. Wife was at a Styx show so I was home alone and the babies were in bed. Had 3 Bacardi and cokes.

Going for a drive woulda been a really bad idea.
