GM issues recall for 30,000 Corvettes

DETROIT - General Motors Corp. is recalling more than 30,000 Chevrolet Corvettes because of a defect that causes detachable roofs to fly off while driving.

The recall issued this past week affects certain 2005-2006 models with painted roofs. The adhesive between the roof panel and magnesium frame my separate, GM spokesman Alan Adler told The Detroit News.

The Corvette's hard top weighs between 5 and 10 pounds. If there is a complete separation, the roof panel may detach from the vehicle and it could strike another vehicle.

"You do not want to hit a 10-pound object at 70 miles per hour," Adler said.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has received 21 complaints from owners of the sports car. But no one has been injured or killed as a result of the glitch, Adler said.

Corvette owners affected by the recall can get a free inspection and repair, if needed, at their local dealership.

My uncle has a 996 and wants a class-action lawsuit to take place so that he can have Porsche buy the car back and get a GT3 (993 block). Isn't that lovely? Porsche is really, really lucky that enthusiasts are so devoted.

Please let me know where those 3 year old $70,000 996TT turbos are. I would love to find one. I'd also like to know what a black sheet is.

Me too, but how much more does a new Vette cost than a 944? My dad won't let me sell the car and get an E36.

Badge aside, the 944 is a nice car- I just want something that can actually carry more than 1 friend. I would miss doing 270 degree onramps at a consistent 45-50 mph, though.

Early 993's were recalled to replace a wiring harness. Many later 993's were plagued with soft valve guides that caused high oil comsumption and failure of part of the emissions system. Repair for this was a top end job. Porsche did some of these under warranty up to 40K or so miles. Unfortunantely for a lot of owners, the prob didn't show up until later and they were stuck with $7K in repairs. This is happening to a LOT of 993's.

Say what ou want about GM quality, but Porsche ain't perfect either.

It just seemed like such a silly thing to go wrong. But some of you guys are correct, I will take a top flying off over an RMS engine replacement any day.

That is too funny. Whats the top speed of these things? Close to 200MPH if I aint mistaken?

Image the other stuff that would get sucked outta there at that speed right after the roof? Bag of stash, toupe, moustache, gold bling, inflatable g-friend........bummer man.

So they'll be fixed and sent back out. The new Vettes are still the bargain of the decade for performance. They look pretty good (to me) too.

But I know what you mean, that backseat is awful.

The GT3 block has a 964 part number. However, I wouldn't call it a 964 or a 993 "block," the engine cases are just based on the aircooled motors (8 main bearings, etc) rather than the new wetsump motors.

in my 924 i hauled

- a fully built 911 engine (busted for speeding too)
- all 911 body panels in one run

in my 944
- 2 L shaped office desks, with drawers
- 5 big Compaq Rack servers + proliant storage units

and i've had 3 passengers in both
there's plenty of room in it, get smaller friends...

I work for GM dealer and find new Corvettes very nice cars indeed. Sure, interior looks like something made by kids and there are quality problems here and there but car is a seriusly fast and cheap to boot.

I would recomend you buy a little truck but I see you don't need one! :)

I saw the picture of one of the first roofs that came off, it wasn't pretty.

The 944 Turbo is an exceptional car. With very few modifications, a 951 will spank 996s, 997s, etc. easily. It was discovered VERY early in the production run that the 951 would easily outperform its much more expensive and "proper" sibling 911, so Porsche de-tuned the 944T so it wouldn't embarrass the 911 buyers.

Of course we know, it didn't take long for people to figure out that with minor adjustments to turbocharger output and ECU maps, the 944T would still walk all over the 911.

Although I like them both (for different reasons), I'd MUCH rather have a modded 951 than a modded 911. Performance-per-dollar, you simply can't beat one.

Just how in the hell does a thread go from GM build quality to the what you can stuff into a 924 to age old pissin contest between a 944 and 911?

Thanks- I don't pretend to know anything about 911 blocks. My uncle was explaining this to me. I guess it fixes the RMS problem, though.

As far as room, I can fit in a 944 backseat...with the front seat all the way forward and the sunroof taken out. I'm 6'1", 170. Who's going to drive if I have 6' tall friends in back?

Top gear recently did a good piece on the new z06, and surprisingly it was the first corvette that they loved, and was just a hair slower on there ranking board than a gt3 (the stig test). It was neat, one of the tests was showing how that 7L engine has so much low-end torque that it could be started from a stop in high gear (fourth or fifth, don't remember which). It went from 0 to 130 something miles an hour in one gear.
I'm still not a fan of the push rod engine, i know it's a great engine, just don't like it. I will admit though, i'm in love with the solstice gxp and can't wait for that car to come out.
