Anyone else here watch UFC (Ultimate Fighting)?

Gracie vs Hughes - main event tonight ended predictably, IMO. I don't want to ruin it for those who TIVO'd the fight so I won't say who won. Tough dudes, real punishment, for not a lot of moola. I can't believe the purse is only $1M for the main event. Some of the pre-fights were more brutal for only a 6 figure payout for the winner. Crazy violence for chump change compared to boxing.

Pretty decent money for no-names the mainstream has never heard of, though. They rarely draw a big crowd, but it seems to be gaining momentum. They need some good marquee fights to pique the general public's interest. The only reason I've tuned in lately is because it's on High Def, and it looks great on the big TV. I'm really impressed with the sportsmanship, and "civility" of the sport, too. There is a very precise method to the mayhem, and it's a very compelling sport to watch when the fighters are good at their craft. I was done with boxing back when Sugar Ray retired. The Golden Boy put on a good show last week, tho.

You three have great avatars...

Matt Hughes is one tough guy. I'm interested to see how this one came out. I've never seen Gracie fight, but have seen Matt a few times. Pound for pound, he's awful tough...

The last UFC was better I think. The Tito and Forest fight was crazy violence....

I love MMA and have competed several times. BJJ is the base of MMA and Royce brought it to the attention of the world. The fight was predictable because the level of fighters has exponentially exploded. Matt Hughes and Chuck Liddell are my favorite fighters.

The Gracie legend has not ended, but serves as the foundation. In the upcoming bout between Tito and Shamrock, Ken is going to get demolished again.

I totally forgot about that fight, i'm going to have to find a torrent hosting it so that i can download it.
And yeah that tito/forrest fight was nuts, and i honestly though it would have gone 5 rounds but oh well. I was also dissappointed when arvalovski lost the heavy weight belt, i hate silva.

Mulhollanddose 05-28-2006 04:10 PM

Can't get enough of it...Pride is better though, UFC is the American upstart. UFC doesn't have the funds for the massive prizes offered in Japan.

David...Liddel is one tough SOB, but he looks and acts like a total ass. I like the humility of Hughes, the guy just strikes me as a really upstanding dude. I like to see that.

Shamrock?...Once awesome, Tito will make quick work.

CroCop > UFCs best

Absolutely not. Bread and circuses.

I can't believe that fight was stopped. Arlovski was barely popped and seemed fine. That was a rip!! IMO, them fighting again so soon (in July) indicates the wrong decision was made by the ref.

Can we talk about the results here yet?? I recorded it and watched it late last night.:D :D

I can't decide if I like Diego Sanchez or not. Seems more focused than a lot of other fighters. Have you ever seen a guy stand that long with his opponent on his back?

nostatic 05-28-2006 05:00 PM

i don't really get the point. It maybe is ultimate bashing championship, or ultimate choking out championship, but the angle that is is about the "best" martial art is laughable. No doubt these guys are insanely tough and have some skills, but it really doesn't "test" self defense or martial arts...

Mulhollanddose 05-28-2006 08:36 PM

You tune in now, FoxSports has Pride fighting on (9:36 pacific time)

Yeah he seemed to fall asleep for a split second after that strike, but the minute he hit the ground he covered up and starting coming back. I don't know if you noticed, but the shots he was taking on the floor he was actually blocking with his palm.

Add a few short knives and things could get real interesting.

Has Gracie developed his Brazilian Ju Jitsu (grapp'lin) fighting school?

Another question, with the popularity of ultimate fighting, what does that say about our society? We sure do have a bloodthirst.

DonDavis 05-28-2006 10:11 PM

Yeah Todd, it is a different thing to watch. It's not much like the early years of no weight classes or time limits. Now the fighters must be versed in many different disciplines. Watering it down in a sense, but forcing the fighters to be versatile. Yet, to see Gracie dominated like that was bizarre.

And I saw how Arlovski was right back into it. That fight should not have been stopped.

Mulhollanddose 05-28-2006 10:12 PM

Nobody, from my understanding, has died in MMA fighting...many have died boxing. MMA, when the practitioners are skilled, is a beautiful sport. Brutality meets ballet.

I have never been a sports spectator, until MMA fighting that is.

Thanks buddy. I hadn't seen it yet...

Well, now that the cat is out of the bag, what happened?

A long time ago...family biz.

I boxed for several years. Some of you who have met me can tell by my shnoz - been busted at least 7 times. I said I boxed but I never said I was good! I do have quick hands from drumming though, but it stops there.

Boxing gloves protect your hands and not the guy that caught the punch. So true. Anyone who has ever hit somebody in the face will tell you that no matter how hard you hit them your hand will hurt like heck later.

I always thought that pro Football should be played with out helmets or pads. I bet you would have far less injuries.

It's no worse than boxing. WWE is by far the worst thing on tv. I grew up a big boxing fan. In the last few years, I have admitted to myself that in boxing they just hit the other guy in the head more than the other. Or go for the body enough to make him lower his hands so they can really pop the guy in the head.

In UFC there are lots of head hitting but it pales in comparision to boxing. And don't tell me they "wear softer gloves". They weigh what, 14-16oz? The ones in UFC are 4oz. I'll take a handful of 4oz bangers over a hundred of 14oz'ers.

There are also submissions. Lots of submissions.

Besides, we have to watch UFC now. Frank Trigg has left UFC. That loudmouth has moved over to Pride because he kept getting schooled.
