Thinking about a new daily driver

We rented a V6 Mustang Convertible this weekend. I really like it. Peppy power plant. The Manual Tranny gets 29 MPG. The wife likes it. I need to replace the Jeep and something with better milage would be nice.

The Mustang is growing on me--haven't driven one yet.

All in attendance agreed that the Evo in either form is one of the most capable and entertaining track cars available today. The learning curve is as short as they come given that the car reacts with quick, predictable movements at every turn. With its fast steering ratio and minimal body roll, lining up the apexes is a point-and-shoot operation — and with so much stick, there's isn't a lot of tail swinging to keep control of. Thrashing the brakes does little to diminish their performance, and even the seats are perfectly formed to hold you in tight.

Is that actually measured or sticker? My VW Jetta (6 cylinder) says 29 mpg highway for a manual and my best in 2 years of ownership is 22 mpg and that is driving conservatively and highway for most of the tank. I suppose if you drive like a grandma and shift early, you might be able to hit 29 mpg. Otherwise not such a great idea.

How about the TDI jetta? I believe it gets 45-50 mpg. I used to work with a guy who had a vw TDI and he loved it.

A 5 series is not in the equation at this moment for $ reasons. A 2006 V6 Mustang Convertible with Std Transmission and minimal options is listing for $22K and I should be able to deal a bit. I might even consider one that is not convertible, since I do have a 914-6.

I just bought a 2003 BMW 325Ci with 30K miles (lease return) for $20,000. It's in perfect shape, has sports and premium packages and gets pretty good mileage. It's still under factory warranty + maintainance. Great little car.

I'm thinking about trading in for a Honda Fit. Should save me a little on my car note, and get almost twice my average fuel efficiency.

Plus, Car and Driver put one through the slalom faster than a Z06 'Vette. ;)

FWIW - we drove a rental '05 Mustang convertible last July when on vacation. It had under 3000 miles on it when we picked it up, I know rental miles, but....

Interior Trunk trim was seperated from the body, clips inact, tried to put it back in place wouldn't stay.

Got maybe 20-22 mpg in mixed highway secondary roads in and around Monterey.

Convertible top action operation was okay at best, the way action between the side windows, rear quarter windows and top was just weird.

Quality of plastic trim was awful. Lots of creaking and rattles.

Steering wheel texture was waayyy too rough.

Steering was vague, at best.
