Montblanc watches?

Hey all,
I know there are some wristwatch fanatics on this board...I was hoping for some opinion on the watches made by Montblanc...are they any good? any known issues?
thanks in advance!

I've seen them, and they're very nice - albeit pricy. I think the movements are Swiss - which is quite ubiquitous for most higher-end watches; so they should be reliable.

My only hangup with Montblanc watches is Montblanc traditionally makes writing instruments - and that's what I know them for. I like to separate my name brand items - watches made by a watch company, pens made by a pen company, etc. For instance, I'd never buy a Mercedes Benz mountain bike, if you know what I mean.

Would you buy a Porsche mountain bike?

Just checking. I know some folks on here have.

Me, I'm a Trek man. Cheap and serviceable.

Yeah, the "but they're a pen company..." factor is weighing on me a bit. On the other hand, I undersdtand that Montblanc shares a parent company with some notable watch manufacturers, notably Cartier. Has anyone else heard the same?
I really like some of their watches and have been interested for some time in getting an "investment" watch to wear with my suit etc.

You must shop in different stores than I! My Trek roadbike cost less than $1k complete. Well, plus another $200 for the mag trainer.

It may be a fine watch but it's a pen brandname. Does it matter? It does to me. But here are lots of fine watches available, go for what appeals to you.
As you used the words "investment watch" I'd suggest you will lose less money with a Rolex.

What exactly is an "investment watch?"

An investment watch is usually an expensive timepiece that holds its value over several years. Not many watches fit this definition, but the concept does help some buyers justify the hefty pricetag.
Now, when it comes to Porsches...

I meant "investment watch" as in a watch that I would wear for years and years, versus a watch that I let fall into disrepair or wear when I'm working on the car or whatever. I doubt I would ever sell a watch so resale isn't the end-all, but what I'm looking for here is one which is very high quality, in the same way that my Pelikan and Montblanc pens are high quality. I'm big into the "buy the best that you can afford" philosophy, and I'm now in a place financially where I can afford to spend more on my watch than the $60 Wenger I have worn for the last few years. I'm looking to upgrade to my first high quality watch, and it just so happens that I know someone who works for Montblanc and I can get the employee discount, so some of their watches are feasible, and I was wondering if I should consider them. Thanks for the input!

I dunno guys. So many of the "name brand" watches seem to be over-rated. There's nothing wrong with paying for a good qualty timepiece, but I wonder if the watched always live up to the name?

Rolex and Tag Heuer are great quality, but have become de rigeur in the jet-set and are therefore outrageously priced.

Breitling on the other hand has plenty of high-quality watches, been around forever, and can be had at much less than Rolex prices. This is what I ended up with. I'm a REAL fan of the sapphire crystal. 5 years and not a SINGLE scratch. Stainless steel construction, love it!

(On a side note, I tried on a titanium one, cool factor 100, but felt so light it could have come from a gumball machine)

Not kidding, these things never get any cheaper. Only downside is that you need to be on the good side of a jeweler and wait 2-3 years for a shot at paying retail for one.

If you are halfway informed, you cannot lose money on pre-owned or vintage Rolex.

I don't believe in watches... They scratch up my powerbook and pull out my arm hairs. If it's about lookig kitchy in public, I just try to avoid those types of people. No offense to those types of people who might be on this board, of course

Does anyone here know anything about Bell & Ross watches? They are beautiful and expensive, but difficult to find.

Bell & Ross are very nice. You will like Sinn also if you like Bell & Ross, so check them out. Both of them use ETA movements and are fairly priced. Check out the timezone.com salescorner if you are looking for a watch.

Heres my old Sinn 656 with a Randall Model 1. Cool watch.

Did you know the wrist watch is one of the most looked at items on a man's body by a woman?

Always loved the look of a solid, simple, mechanical watch.

lol. I just scored a free Trek/Snap On 80th Anniversary bike from my friendly local neighborhood Snap On pusher in a Christmas raffle. sure, she's a no-frills, 21-speed rigid (I prefer suspension and disk brakes) with a few Snap On commemorative graphics that has been sitting in a box for four years (the 80th anniv. was in 2000) but hey, free is free!
