I know you guys have the answer
So I planted a new lawn from seed a few weeks ago, and it is growing great. It is doing so well that two rabbits moved into my back yard, and they are eating it. There was an empty field three houses away from me until two years ago, and then they graded it for the new housing tract that is almost complete now. The rabbits, mice, rats, gophers, etc. moved into our neighborhood, but the coyotes that ate them moved away.
So what is the easiest way to rid myself of the pests? I don't want to put poison out because I don't want to risk my 2 year old my daugter getting ahold of any because she might eat it. What else works? |
Cats

Maybe, but I hesitate to make that kind of commitment at this point. I wouldn't ever need to feed him though. There is plenty of food to catch. Can a cat take on a possum or a racoon? We have those too, but they only visit instead of moving in.

a 12 guage. Just don't let your daughter play with it ;)

X2 on the cats.
They don't like them "wascally wabbits." |

Pellet gun or slingshot.

Won't a dog work? I would think that (most) Tabby wouldn't be able to take on a fullgrowed wabbit. |

I say blowdarts. Quite and lethal. You can nail a house fly at 30 paces with a little practice. Put a dart into its temple and it will never know what hit'm. |
20 foot Python or Boas (non-feather) should do the trick.

You put it out in protected containers that children, dogs, and cats can't get into, but vermin can. It's usually sold in hardware stores and the like. I've used it, very effective. |
My parents trap them. Late each spring they show up. They bought a cage trap and have used it to catch every one that has shown up. We then take the rabbits miles from our house and release them. It is an ongoing problem, but poison is not the answer. Rabbits really seem to like Magnolia flower petals after they turn brown, but are still a little moist.
Although last year we drove by an off leash dog park and I had the idea of letting a rabbit go in there..... Dave |
I had 3 rabbits in my yard last night while the family was out playing. The rabbits were grazing about 10 feet away from us and couldn't have cared less about our presence. My cat was also with us - he also couldn't have cared less. Maybe I'll starve that little pisser for a few days and see if his attitude changes.

Blowguns are cool... but get yerself a crossbow. It is the best silent vermin assassin I've ever used.... and it's very effective against varmints as well. Heck, with hunting tips, it's good for all but the largest game.
A good 150# (or higher) draw bow and that bolt will leave the rail with a frightening amount of energy (think .45 ACP kind of energy). Happy hunting. Freeze Gopher!!! JP |

That's the most foul, cruel, and bad-tempered rodent you ever set eyes on! Look, that rabbit's got a vicious streak a mile wide! It's a killer! What you need is the holy hand grenade of Antioch. http://www.geocities.com/ieee754/ari...nd-grenade.JPG Available wherever finer religious relics are sold. |
One.... Two...... FIVE!!!!

One of the pictures the neighbor took made it into the L.A. Times. It was pretty amazing to see a possum walking along the top of a wood fence with three crossbow bolts sticking right through the center of it's body. |
My wife has vetoed anything that causes violence to a bunny because they are too cute. She said one of her friends suggested coyote urine. Apparently they sell it as a spray. It seems to me that since there aren't any coyotes in the neighborhood any more that the rabbits won't know what it is. So I think I am going to have to head over to Orange County Farm Supply, and buy a live catch trap.

Oohhhh a humane trap. You pinnacle predator, you.
Once again the "wife" takes all the fun out of the possible solutions to a problem. OTOH, it is b/c they're "cute" and all... so she has a "reason." Just surrender your canine teeth with along with your testicles and everything will be oh-kay. :p j/k, you poor bastard. JP |
