Cayman Spam
Anyone else get this? If so, I suspect that once again our emails have been mined form the Pelican list. This pisses me off no end.
A question: How can I shield my email addy when it's required to register in all these forums, etc.? I'm trying to retire my old email along with my old user name, but my ISP won't let me delete my primary address. That too, pisses me off. Makes me want to go off line altogether! |
Get a gmail account - miltdontwantnomorespam@gmail.com is available i'd bet. Use that to register for forums.etc/.

Well, if you decide you want a gmail account, just ask. I've got tons of invites, I know others on hte boards do as well.

Rule #1
NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, use you primary email to register for anything. Go to hotmail (or one of the many other free email sites), get a free emailbox and voila... use that to register for whatever and check it once a week to dump out all the spam and check for the rare meaningful mail. Did I mention never use your primary email to register for ANYTHING. I have my work email that is just for that, a personal account for friends and family, and three other (free) email addresses that I use for questionable net surfing. ;) |
What Scottmandue said.
What with how it's so easy to sign up for one or more hotmail, yahoo, gmail, etc. accounts I'm stunned anyone would be so foolish as to use their "home" or "main" e-mail address for anything. I've found that the spam filters on yahoo mail are pretty good, the ones on gmail are outstanding and the ones on hotmail pretty much suck. As such, I use my yahoo mail account for just about anything other than work or personal stuff. Those go to my work & home e-mail addresses respectively. Think of it as getting a P.O. Box for all the crap that isn't from people you know personally (friends, relatives, etc.) That's another thing I highly recommend, BTW. |
I can't be bothered with this. I just got an unsolicited email hot stock tip, and I'm waiting for it to EXPLODE! Or take off like a rocket, or something like that. Then there is this great offer I got on V/a/i/G/ra....

Uh, that would mean I'd be getting back to fellow Pelicans about once a week?! I'm sorry, but I have too many transactions going on here at any given time to be that lax. |
Well, my point being you can have multiple email boxes that you can prioritize and check with whatever frequency you feel appropriate.
For me that would be: Work email = Check hourly (I get assigned tasks via email) when I am at work when I am off the clock, screw 'em (I do know people who check their work email from home). Personal email = (only given to friends and family) I have my cell phone set up to alert me when I get mail there. Low Priority email = used if there is any hint of spam, to register at a site to upload audio/video/etc. drivers or software I need for something I am working on... or if you are at the Porsche dealer and they have a "sign up to win a new Porsche, give us your email" that email I check weekly. |
