I'd rather live with the pain than see my doctor

Sprained my wrist a couple of weeks ago but haven't seen my doctor...yet. I hate the wait in the office. I also don't like bad news. Plus I'm afraid of needles. All excuses, I know. Truth is, I'd rather see my dentist than my doc. I get my semi-annual teeth cleaning and check-up religiously but the thought of seeing a doctor triggers my fight or flight instinct. Polar opposite of most folks, right?

I hate visiting my doctor but I seem to have some sort of annual medical fiasco. In the midst of one right now (3 visits so far, no conclusions yet) and it's the worst stress I've had to deal with all year...including the rather rough birth of my son.

You might want to consider firing your current doctor if you're not comfortable with him/her.

with most life threatening things, i figure alittle bit of early warning is worth the stress. i dont mind the doctor visit.

let that wrist rest chris; use the other hand.

Sorry, I misread the location of the injury. Its your wrist, not ankle. Is this a work or (p)leisure related injury ?

I'm the same way, slipped in the shower a few months back and cracked a rib. Took a couple of days off and kept telling myself and my friends I would go to the doctor but never did.

I like my Doc., he's a young guy who doesn't feel the need to "probe" me much. He wants me to come in every three to four months so he can check my cholesterol and blood sugar, I usually stretch that out to every six months.

Next week I go to hospital for a scan on my heart to determine why I have a murmur detected 9 weeks ago when I went to the doctor having had high blood pressure and chest pain.
9 weeks of waiting for Tony Blairs wonderfull health service to investigate. With the stress and worry.

I watched my wife go through the agony of breast cancer/liver cancer/kidney cancer/lung cancer and she was brave to the moment she died.

Get down to your doctor and dont be such a pussy.

Hey, it's your choice what you do. Generally, a sprained wrist will only bother you for a couple weeks. You can try immobilizing it with a wrist splint that you get from the local drugstore. But if it continues to bother you, it's possible to have a more serious injury (complete ligament tear, TFC tear, scaphoid fracture). Those are more problematic to treat, and can lead to arthritis down the road. Not saying that to scare you, but if your pain persists, try visiting a hand surgeon. A needle (cortisone injection) is unlikely to get pulled out at the first visit, anyway.

I always pick female docs. That way the probing isn't so bad. Plus they usually have smaller hands. I was probed by a man doc one time. It felt like he had HUGH forearms. Yikes

Me too...my MD is a PITA...since everything turned "HMO" in this country, all that happens is that he's quick with his prescription pad...and he only suggests tests that he knows are good for insurance $$$. Haven't been back to him in years...at my age, 62, maybe I should. But then, I think a "primary care physician" should be somebody better than a dude who whips out a prescription pad, and begins every sentence with "at your age". I think I'd rather take two aspirin and call him later...MUCH later...like in 20 years, with a ghostly tap on the shoulder when he's screwing his nurse?

Excellent advice. Look, medicine is a service industry. If you are not getting the service you are paying for, move on.

If however, you have some suck-butt HMO and think you should be treated like royalty for your $5 co-pay, grab a number then sit your ass down and wait.

Chris, you simply have carpal tunnel syndrome from repetitive motion. Don't you have a track day coming up?????

Give it a rest brother!

Hey, my co-pay is $15!

Chris, it's not RMI. I sprained it at the gym and aggravated it at work.

If it hurts after track day next week, I'm going to see my doc and hope to God he doesn't shoot me up with cortisone. I hate needles!

My son went in today for allergy testing. 17 needles in his back and arms to find out what he is allergic to. He didn't flinch and never cried. Upon leaving I told him I was proud of him. He said "whats the big deal, they'r only needles now a catfish spike...THAT HURTS!" I guess it is all perspective.

Sprained wrist may be nothing but what if you have a subtle fracture? In a few years it may prove to be something a lot more then you thought.

A lot of small, hard-to-heal bones in the wrist. You might need surgery. I wouldn't put it off.
