Really impressed with my new D-Link Router and PC card
I thought I'd upgrade to a 108 Mbps router and PC card (from the internal 54 Mbps card that came with my laptop) and I was a bit skeptical that I'd see a real world improvement in speed but web pages seem to load almost immediately now and my indicated connection speed never varies from 108 Mbps whereas with my internal card I would spend a lot of time at 24 Mbps and sometimes even slower. I couldn't be more impressed.

I just read that 802.11n standard wireless devices are going to hit the market in the next year or so that are expected to provide data transfer rates in the neighborhood of 540Mbps.

Not bad, but not great when you're stuck behind a cable modem that only gets you 5Mbps down.
With FOIS and other speed increases... faster wireless will be very nice!

It's great if you move around a lot of big files on your internal network (like video from your tivo in my case) but most people sit behind a 1.5MbPS or 3MbPS at most DSL connection. Still, I totally understand the horsepower appeal.
 Edit - Matt and I are on the same wavelength.

As above.
Unless you are really using the internal network for large file movements on a daily basis, whats the point? In the near term, and probably the long term, your internet connection will always be the bottle neck. |

My ISP connection is just 1.5 Mbps but this upgrade has doubled my actual wireless download rate from about 65kbs to 140 kbs and the connection speed stays constant. WIMAX is coming too and covers a much larger area than WIFI but is it just 75Mbps?
